I am putting up my F355 for sale but was curious should I do the major service on it first or sell it as is? 1997 spider 14,500 miles manual transmission.
This question was asked recently here is the thread: https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/belt-change-prior-to-sale-listing.568246/#post-145794412
When I bought my 355, I wanted to have the major done by my guy. That is usually the preference of most buyers.
What he said. I think the discount you'll apply to the car for not having the major done is less than what you'll pay in actually doing it.
Here's my 0.02. If your car is over 5yrs beyond last major, do it. It could be viewed as gross neglect, well under driven.. what else was passed? Your call but remember F buyers are the biggest (buyer) babies out there.
If a buyer wants a major they can skip your car. It will sell to the guy who wants it done by his guy or him/herself. I see no point in paying for a major then selling.
Sell it a auction as is. There is no 355 market right now and most 355 buyers, if you can find one, aren't on Ferrari chat.
When I bought my car, it was about 3 1/2 years beyond the last service. The seller said he could arrange the service for $6 or $7K. I thought I would rather drive the car for a year or so to see what else need to be addressed, then have it done by a person I trusted. I certainly paid more, (as I knew I would) but I knew I would get what I paid for.
I more or less agree with this, however, I'd recommend listing it for cheap on here or Autotrader or eBay for a few months first. I think you'll get a slight premium compared to an auction.
A neglected F355 is mostly avoided especially with the spook of maintenance/repair costs. PPI is only skin deep.. let's be honest.
I would like to pipe in as a non owner (but very much looking to buy within the next few years as a retirement gift to myself! ) If you had a major done, I would be glad I didn't have to do that, I would probably pay a bit more knowing the car was sorted out, especially if the work was done by a renowned shop/mechanic. If the major wasn't done, I would be thrilled to get the car for slightly less, and I would do the major myself. (as an experienced 'wrench' I would feel quite capable to do one.) It would give me the time to 'get to know' my new Ferrari! I would still have a PPI done, especially if I was unable to look at/ inspect the car before purchasing.
