Anyone agree a 360 modena is like a Porsche 996, that nobody wants it? It came from a porsche sales agent.
I was looking at used 911 at a dealer and while speaking with a sales agent, he asked me what I was driving today. He knows that I have a turbo and RS. So I said I was driving my 360 today. Then he mentioned that a 360 is like a 996, that nobody wants it. Thats the first time I have heard that comparison.
I can sort of see that, both are kind of underappreciated at the moment and a huge value for what they’re going for. I suspect the 360 will eventually be sort of rediscovered as it becomes a classic though since it looks so much better than what came before and after it... I’m not sure the 996 will ever me that much loved except as a great bargain for such a solid driver’s car.
I like 996 TT's, but in the same breath, they don't hold a candle to the style or curves of a 360. To say someone "wouldn't want one" is just an asinine statement from someone who should be more in-tune with what a customer wants. Just in 2001 alone they made over 6500 plain ol' 996 slick tops, sooooo....Again, if he's throwing a 360 away, send him my contact info please
Thats the first time I have heard hearing that and it was a shock. I know the agent so I just kept silent but It made me think if it was an objective observation? These people sell cars so is that how the market is?
And the 996 is the most underestimated 911 it is a GREAT car and examples like the Turbo are incredible machines. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
aside from the fact that they coexisted during the same timespan, i wouldn't say that the 360 is like the 996 in that no one wants it. Aside from the polarizing looks of the 996, it had fundamental engine flaws (ie, IMS on non turbo and GT3 models) that made it a ticking time bomb which is what contributes to it being such a value when compared to all the other 911 models.
Yeah it's just like a 996. You can buy one for about the same price... what $15k? Sure. Happens all the time. Can you please pass the pipe because I'd like some of what ever he's smoking... See... When you say really stupid things, you loose credibility. Just imagine what stoopid comes out of his mouth about Porsche when he leaves and works for Infiniti...
How would he know what the Ferrari market does..? He sells Porsches. Market research a-la Jalopnik confirms a fool beyond all doubt. Does he drive a Ferrari or does he drive a leased Cayman or GTI like all the other sales guys that I've met here.. I'd have called him out.
As someone who owned a 996 911 for about a year, I can assure you that they're not even in the same galaxy, let alone discussion.
GT3 models don’t have the IMS issue, only non turbo 996s. They (GT3) are pretty bulletproof engines. IMS is also an overblown issue. Many never detonate but it’s a gamble. Relatively inexpensive fix on most MY 996. To say that 360s and 996s are in the same category for depreciation is ignorant at best.
It will be like a Porsche 964. When 993s first started to gain the 964 lagged. Now buyers are as nuts about 964s as they are about 993s.
The 360 was a high production car in Ferrari terms. 16k were made including the challenge cars (or there abouts). I think (correct if wrong) that is more then the 308 328 series..which began in 1976. You can' really compair the 2 cars, yet they both represent the first higher volume production car for both companies. There are plenty of 360's out there and the price reflects it. The 996 I always thought was a cheesy car. The interior is awful, and the look is bland. The 360 always seemed a bit lazy in effort on Ferraris part also. It should have been so much more. Same with the Porsche. The 430 should have been the 360, and the 997 should have been the 996.
The only thing I can tell you is that when I wanted to buy my 360, every salesman (Ferrari) said "oh boy, I can't even get my hands on those, I wish I had one to sell you, they go like hotcakes! The good ones go for top dollar" Then when I want to trade it in, they say "oh boy, those cars are a dime a dozen, not really hot sellers!" LMFAO, gotta love car salesmen!
Car sales 101: 1, Insult your customer. 2, Try to shame him into buying what you can sell him and complement him on his wisdom. Give me a break. What a jerk.
I came to own my first Ferrari after many years of owning Porsches, and when turned into RWD the 996tt (I did it with 2 of them) is quite a car. My neighbor has one, though he refuses to let me touch it (not everyone is my kind of crazy), and yes the interior is dated (more so than a 360 in my opinion), but I would not say it is a car no one wants. Obviously you met a moron, and since I'm not known for my manners I would have pointed out his ignorance as well as the fact he probably could not sell a life raft to a drowning man, and perhaps he should try a new line of work.
Both are good reliable cars. Both have value. They may not be as good as their successor models, but that could be said for a lot of things.
Let’s remember when the 308 was 30k, the Testarossa 40k, the 550 60k And also if I remember correctly the now coveted 993 and 964 models were getting spiderwebs on the used car lots. Nobody wanted them I am not saying the 360 will eventually shoot up in value (hopefully not or I will drive mine less) but sometimes models that nobody wants get desired later. A properly set up 360 is one of the best driving Ferraris someone can own. I have had some amazing cars (off the top of my head: '72 Ferrari Daytona, '73 Porsche Carrera RS 2.7, '79 BMW M1, '82 Lamborghini Countach, etc. etc. etc.) and my 360 is one of the best driver's cars that I've owned. In fact that the only car that I own that I would consider a better driver's car is my F40. All of that said, I am not sure what the point of this thread is. I’m not sure if you actually think that a Ferrari 360 is really comparable to a Porsche 996 in any way or if you just want to make a thread. If the guy wanted to wind you up he certainly got what he wanted because you went and started a thread on the internet about it. You should have simply handed him your card and said that you'll take every 360 he get your hands on as they must be worth next to nothing as no one wants them.
I drove a 996 daily for several years. The only reason I wouldn’t have another is the terrible looking head lights. The IMS, etc are easy fixes and way overblown. That said, the 997 I also spent several years in was simply great. Much better overall than the 991 I had after it. That guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I heavily considered the GT3 andTurbo for the better engines, but can’t get past the head lights. I had the CS out on my “loop” yesterday (not same as 360) and it is as good as any car I’ve ever driven. The vintage F1 system which you can manually blip the throttle on downshifts is fantastic. Much more fun than the DSC in the modern cars. The fast steering rack is amazing. And that Sound !
