<originally posted in general, reposting here> I'm confused about the tires for the F12. I currently have on super sports. I cannot figure out if these are run flat. They look similar to the tires on my Z06 which are runflat but I can't find any markings that make sense to me indicating that on either tire. My google fu is failing me as well. Anyone know if these are runflat or how to tell? Next up, when I need new tires what's the best? I do prefer to have runflats for cross country trips, they've never failed me. So what are the best tires for the F12?
I changed my F12 tires last October 2017 from the Pirelli's P0 to the Michelin's Pilot Supersport. At the time I received here advice from several other F12 owners and a large majority recommended the MPP. The tires specifications are: Front: 255/35 R20 97 ZR (Y) XL K2 Rear : 315/35 R20 110 ZR (Y) XL K2 The F12 with the MPP fells safer and with more grip in all the different conditions I've driven since having put the new tires.
On my F12 I had brand new P Zeros put in March 2017 and these are the ones I’m comparing with the MPSS put also new in October 2017. The comparison is uniquely based on my feeling and experiences while driving F12 and that's what I think: The MPSS are firmer than the P Zeros but at the same time they feel smoother. At high speed the P Zeros seemed to transmit more energy to the chassis in the form of an unpleasant vibration much less noticeable with the MPSS. I tried the two types of tyres at very high speeds around 320 Km/hour and apart from the fact that the MPSS induce less vibration in the chassis the car felt a lot more in control and compressed against the tarmac. In the wet road the MPSS definitely have much more grip than the P Zeros but even when the surface is dry the difference is quite noticeable. The reason why I've changed the P Zeros with only 4000 Km and in very good condition, had to do with my loss of trust on these tyres. Last July while using the F12 on a race track after a very light rainfall, every time I pressed a bit the accelerator in a curve the rear was all over the place and the P Zero's grip on these conditions was extremely poor. A couple of months later while driving on a road in totally dry conditions, while overtaking another car on a straight with the manettino set in Sport as soon as I pressed the accelerator sudenly the rear went left, than right, than left until I gained control. This epysode scared the hell out of me and after that I've had enough and never trusted the P Zeros anymore.
The PZ4 was launched in September, if I am not mistaken. Also, Pirellis need a bit of a warm up. I was at a track event where they compared tyres. The Pirellis came out first. Not my judgement, it was the stopwatch that made the decision! I am a Bridgestone man myself, but those Pirellis were mighty!!!
My only experience with Bridgestone's was with the Potenzas on a California I had which was equipped with a set from 2013. I changed these tires to the MPSS in 2015 and very honestly the difference was night and day. I'm not a tire specialist or defending any brand but I understand that manufacturers are always developing new tires and a model of a older generation which wasn't somehow brilliant can be improved and launched some years later better and completely different.
I think Michelin usually puts a little "RFT" in a circle logo for their run flats. I'm not sure if they make Pilot Super Sports in RFT. According to TireRack there is 1 RFT for the F12b: Bridgestone Potenza 007RFT https://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSearchResults.jsp?tireIndex=0&autoMake=Ferrari&autoYear=2016&autoModel=F12berlinetta&autoModClar=Runflat+tires&frontWidth=255%2F&frontRatio=35&frontDiameter=20&frontSortCode=59900&rearWidth=315%2F&rearRatio=35&rearDiameter=20&rearSortCode=60200
Yeah, that's about all I could dig up as well. I might have to skip the runflats and just stick with the super sports.
I can understand your wishing to have less worry about a flat for long distance driving. I think getting a flat would be terrible. And the spare takes up the whole trunk. But (knock on wood) so far I have had good luck with normal tires.
I would highly recommend the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. It’s very very grippy, perfectly predictable when it sliding, amazing under braking and the performance in the wet is confidence-inspiring. Let us know if you need a hand getting a set over to you. We have the best pricing available.
Just curious if the 4S is made in the rear size? I haven’t been able to find the 4S, only the PS4 in 315/35ZR20
I agree. The MPSS is better than the PZ4 on all accounts. Less noise, smoother, better grip both hot and cold. As far as I know, the 4S is not available for the F12 in neither a Ferrari homologated or non-homologated version. Not even sure there's a 315/35R20 available at all. I believe the 4s 812 tyre is on its way, but it's still being homologated.
They are not available yet. Once released, the part number for the 315/35R20 K spec 4S will be R-374216. There will however, not be a matching front for the F12 as this is the 812 tyre. But there is a 275/35R20 matching front on its way. This 812 tyre combo should work great on the F12.
