I guess I am in the minority. To me the 488 was an improvement over the 458. I like the side and rear view of the 488 better than the 458. Once the 488 was introduced I looked at the side view of the 458 and it looked to plain, the side vents break up the view in a nice way.

My wife could care less about cars and questioned why I traded in my 458 for a 488. She said they were identical cars.

The 458 is the best looking Ferrari to me since the F40.
The 328, 348, 360 and 430 were "OK" in the day but when the 458 came out I didn't have to ask myself; Do I like it ?
That said I'd rather have a Scud or 599.
Looks is only one part of the equation.

PS the 488 and 458 look the same to 99% of the people.
Calling one stunning and the other ugly is picking nits.

Sorry but from many angles and distances the 488 doe not improve the 458 lines. I have struggled with this because I really wanted the 488 to take the 458 lines to the next level but it just doesn’t in my opinion. Technology wise it absolutely does although I am a N/A fan and have never enjoyed a Turbo...

488s are beautiful. Especially the Pista.

    The Irony of Fchat

If the 488 Pista was made in 1985 everyone on Fchat would drool over it.

True. And the 328, from the mid-eighties, while simply being an update of the 308 WAS considered beautiful . . and it still is.

328 was the beginning of modern design at Ferrari. Integrated bumpers, cleaner shapes, better interiors, and creature comforts that actually worked.

Funny, for me the 328 was the beginning of the end in terms of design with Ferrari. That's not to say there haven't been some nice cars peppered in over the years, because there have been. But I hated the integrated bumpers and I'm still not a fan. I've always felt the "black bumper" cars of the 70's and early 80's looked much more aggressive and pure, and thus beautiful (to me). The integrated bumper era always felt very "nice" and milquetoast in comparison. I loathed the 348 and 355. The only car I thought it worked on was the 456. To each their own.

I'd happily own a 458 coupe. It has issues but overall it seemed like a return to form for Ferrari. Not such a fan of the 488. The design is too fussy and gimmicky....a trend which got taken to a whole new level of yuck with the 812.

I'm not commenting if its better or not. Personally I like chrome bumpers. But black bumpers and little patches of black vents here and there went out the door with the 328 and pretty much haven't come back since. The 360 was the final straw going completely modern with no pop up headlights.

The 328 was the break between the old and modern. It wasn't alone. A lot of cars in the late 80's headed that way.

If you are to look at a 328 today, you would say that looks like a modern car. The 308 not so much.

Yes, agree completely...about the 328 and automotive design at the time in general. Was just piling on to the mound of 2 cents(s). :)

I'm not the greatest fan of "modern design". Personally I think too many cars all look the same today and too many copy each other too much. But they do, probably for safety and cost reasons, have integrated bumpers and less outrageous detail.

Better or worse is not my point. Modern design or old is. Which is better can be debatable for 1000 years. :)

Very, very nice although when the topic of beauty comes up someone always has a picture of a car I don't really like but it looks good in their picture. I've even seen a picture of an FF that makes it look good and that is really stretching it for me.

Which proves you are not perfect. :)

As proof, I offer the 288 GTO. We all drooled over this. Is it better looking than a Pista? No.

Different era, different style cars. In my opinion it is the driving experience that has changed quite a bit where newer cars no longer have that same thrill, that rawness. While considering switching from my 458 Spider to a 488, took the 488 Spider few times for a ride. Great daily driver, smoother suspension, lighter steering and I will not discuss the turbo whistle, which is louder that I thought it would be. Great car, but while 458 is a wild stallion that needs to be tamed, 488 is a show horse that won’t get away from you. As result, 458 is a keeper. The 812 though, is an absolute beast and those who have not driven the car, I would strongly recommend driving it, before discussing aesthetic preferences.
