At one point he said that it is nothing like a std 488. Power everywhere.

 

The chief one with Rafael S. is nuts! The car sounds unreal!

Forgive me the stupid question, does anyone know the reason for the test media of the 488 prototype track? why do they use these pre-series versions with light camouflage?

 

Beyond me. So stupid. As if we don't ant to see the car is all its glory.

 

Quite simply the press cars are not available yet and for journalists to meet a deadline they simply let them drive the pre-production models. They keep some full spec Pista builds for photography but they are not for beating around on the track...

 

I think I read in one of the reviews that the tests were actually held in February before the official unveiling (so Ferrari did not want to have non camouflaged cars on the track and roads); the articles / reports were then submitted to embargo, explaining why they are only released now.

 

The exhaust header has expansion bellows....maybe the exhaust will not now disintegrate! (photo 47)

 

Official Italian base price, VAT 22% included: Euro 296000 (4k euro less than the 812S and 67 K Euro more than the 488 GTB)

 

that's a steep increase. Depends also on which options are included....

 

Usually none. I think that a well loaded Pista will cost more than a well loaded 812S, as this Pista "requires" a ton of carbon fiber options and also the stripe option to look great as it deservers, so here (Italian market) real Pista prices will be between 350 and 400 K euro (422-488 K USD)

Similar situation in France; with a 20% VAT but including emission and luxury taxes, the base price is € 300K, so real prices will be between 350K and 400K indeed. I'm curious to see how these prices will resist when there'll be a second-hand market, given that a low miled Speciale (most are low miled) can be purchased for 300K or slightly more... not to mention a 488 GTB for 200K.

 

in second hand french market, I see Speciale 300-320 K€ Pista 380-400 k€

Speciale is similar GT3RS, Pista is similar GT2RS : 2 different markets

 

I have searched the thread looking for the Geneva Pista (RC) config info. Would anyone have a pic of the options from the plaque in the front?

As an aside, I drove the 488 Challenge at a very wet Silverstone yesterday. It was a small part of the track based around the Stowe complex but enough to know the car is wonderful to drive. I have driven the 458 Challenge at both Fiorano and Varano and the differences are interesting and perhaps relevant to what we can expect from the Pista.

First thing to note is that Ferrari can make a car handle absolutely beautifully. Normally you might put that down to the slicks and aero of the challenge car, but in this case the tyres were wets and the speed lower so the aero maybe not so influential. The confidence the car inspires is amazing with immense power under braking and immediately telegraphed messages for when either the front or the rear was breaking away. I hate to say the word ‘easy’ but it is sort-of appropriate. The car is so hardwired into you that you don’t fight it at all, you easily get into a flow and no matter how fast you are, if you can do that you are experienceing one of life’s best motoring pleasures.

Compared with the 458 Challenge, I did notice that at lower engine revs the car has less boost with it being better to keep the engine higher in the range for really slow corners, however in the wet that doesn’t work so well so, differently to the standard 488 (whose engine and gearbox is 100% carried over but not sure about software) you can feel the turbos boosting much more. Other than for slow corners the torque on offer is mighty though and above 3,000rpm the 488’s linear feeling is still there meaning that the powertrain still plays its part at getting you to flow with the car.

The reduced weight and race geo brings the car alive though and if the Pista is halfway between the 488 and Challenge, honestly, we’re in for a real treat.

For Porsche it's clearly the intent to have 2 different markets since they produce both cars at the same time, for Ferrari in spite of using a different technology (turbo vs NA, which is also the difference between the 488 GTB and 458 Italia), the Pista is the successor of the Speciale - so there is no obvious reason to consider it should address a different market.
In France (and Europe) Speciale are now sliding under €300K... a new Pista will cost in the range of €350 to €400K, and I'm not sure it will keep that value.

I see the same difference between Scuderia/Speciale and Speciale/Pista but nothing's sure

 

as the front of the pista is mostly curved and very thin, how/where is the front license plate gonna fit....wont it block the air flow for the S duct?
