Modified Dino 246

I appreciate that some people want to maintain their cars in as original condition as possible. For history and originality we need cars owners with that mindset. I fully understand the reasoning. Attached is a link to a Ferrari collector who spent a million dollars modifying his 246 GTS. He has a large collection of Ferrari's and wanted modern car performance with classic lines. That's one of the reasons I turbocharged my QV. The story is worth the read.

Sorry to derail the thrust of your post but it's good to see the standard of journalism on these articles never fails to disappoint. The opening headline:
"The Dino, a long-derided sports car..." really?

"But the original version has long been snubbed by Ferrari adherents for its relatively high production numbers, small engine, and anemic 192 horsepower."

But they surpassed themselves with this:
"...auctions experts such as Hagerty’s Jonathan Klinger have argued that the Dino has more investment potential than, say, the sexy and popular Ferrari 308."

 

I would do all sorts of stuff if I had the resources and the ability. I'm glad that some collectors take ownership of their cars and do what they want with them.

Btw Instead of offering this stupid Classiche Certification to thoose few poor bastards who have managed to keep old rustbuckets in original condition, Ferrari could offer decent spare parts for us who want to drive them.

Any classic Ferrari meeting today's performance standards is what a lot of guys have been wishing for. A faster safer car with a stick. If you're not a fan of today's styling (which I'm not), this is the way to go. The Enzo era cars are far more beautiful. Although a million bucks is a little extravagant for a retrofit, it can be done for a lot less. It's your car, do what you want.

I think it's cool and Lee has every right to do whatever he wants to his own car but the idea of snatching up all the Dinos and doing this makeover on them to sell to Saudi princes doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling if you know what I mean.

 

I love, love, love it. I would even consider trading my 308 for it! Howz that?!

I agree its a little more worrisome if it becomes a mass produced product. Why not make a kit car imitation instead? However, there were 1,300 246 GTSs made so 25 or 50 "evos" is not a big impact on availability. Whether they are stock or evo-ed, they are going to the same level of collectors anyway.

Is that a 308/328 bored out to a 3.6 litre?

 

More importantly.... how did he fit a 360 gearbox on a transverse layout???

I dont like it at all. I like a certain level of tasteful modifications,which those wheels are not, but then it gets to a point when its too much.

 

Luckely the wheels are the easiest thing to change. I'm sure you could order whith something else.

The worst mod that have been done on classic F-cars is the electric 308. You have to change your garage sign from:

Engine swap looks nicely executed. Don’t like the flares. Wheels are a clever take on the Ragno design. I think the standard car is just fine as it is but each to their own

If money is no object, and I really wanted the looks of the original Dino, but with a modern drive train, then I'd have one built from scratch - I wouldn't fit DINO badges to it though, and I would be honest with people about exactly what it is.

 

I think a point that is being lost is that the owners has all the cars he wants, has gotten bored with his 288s and Enzos, so just had something unusual built just to spice things up.

 

I don’t imagine the Y or N camps will be swayed by posts from the other. Nonetheless there looks to be no small amount of complex work gone into this.

Given that I rather like the Swedish mondial modified below (I think this is the mondial one, rather than the original). I don’t suppose chopping up a Dino is much of a travesty ;-)

Would I do it? Never...I really like the Dino 2x6 but not enough to mod one for performance or as a feed-a-need project. I'd much rather enjoy having a super nice driver and never worrying about it.

Do I like it? Hell yes! I love that he can do this and did it. Big props! Not all of it do I like, but the idea and the execution is well done and it makes him, the owner, happy. That's what I really like best.

As for making 50 more for some other uber-wealthy dudes...sure! It's great for other Dino owners. Think about it. Now there will be some place in SoCal looking to buy those so-so Dinos, driving the prices up to some degree in the process. It will also leave a slightly smaller pool of unmolested Dinos, which also makes those cars more valuable to some degree. The exposure of some rich dudes driving these outlaws around also serves to re-expose the Dino. My teenagers like older Ferraris, but they will LOVE this!

Don't really get the obsession with originality / anti-Outlaw sentiment in the Ferrari world. Porsche (Ruf etc) have been there for years, and are well accepted. It's not like he is molesting something super-rare.

 

Yeah, I think the guys at Moto technique are top notch. They did an outlaw F40 (found a thread in the F40 section) which was a second layer of mods on an F40 tuned up in Germany many years ago to go racing. Again, nice execution.

 

I can sort of agree with you on the obsession but there were only about 3500 Dino's made (don't know how many are left) compared to what seems like a billion 911's. I know, I'm exaggerating for effect here but if comparing the two side by side the Dino might be considered "super rare"

Like I said earlier I have no problem with this as a "one off" but don't particularly like the idea of doing it to a bunch of cars, especially if they all end up in Dubai.

 

I believe there were only 1,300 246s made. Porsche's 2016 production was 238,000 vehicles so it takes Porsche just over two days to make 1,300 vehicles. If the number is 3,500, it takes them 5 ½ days (and it takes them just under 20 days to make as many cars as Ferrari made 308s over its 10 year run).

 

It's his car, his money, his boredom. He can do whatever he likes with that combination. I'll still roll my eyes in the same way that I would if you did an LS swap on a vintage 550 Spyder.

 

Would be interesting to see how many takers he gets at $1 million for the conversion alone.
