There is an article in the latest issue of Enzo, which compares 5 generations of front-engined berlinettas from Daytona, through 550, 599, F12 to 812, which makes interesting reading.

A Maranello is pretty much a Maranello except to us lunatic fringe. Either would have worked for the comparison.

    599 not the 599 GTO
    F12 not the F12 TDF
    550 not the 575

lol jk dont wanna trigger the 550 crowd, for now they win the battle of more expensive car but I refuse to say the 550 is the BETTER car

The F12 TDF would move up on my list, above the 599 or 599 GTO. The changes they made to the F12 really made the TDF more attractive to me.

Yes, the F12 TdF was a much better looking car than the F12.

Tried to order the magazine from the link from "ferraridriver", but there is no possibility to order from Germany.
Tried to order directly from the publisher from UK, 1st issue I can get is issue 5, issue 4 not possible.

So who could help, order this magazine issue 4 and send it well packed to me.
    I would pay with PayPal.

I finally bought this magazine and read the article yesterday. It was worth reading (thanks John) but also strangely unsatisfying. John Barker, the writer, is a very experienced motoring journalist who knows his stuff, but the tone, like in all the issues of this new magazine that I have seen, is curiously muted, and superficial. The legacy classic car magazines do this kind of thing pretty well. It's possibly the difference between a writer who's spent most of his career writing about these cars as they come out, against one who's used to writing about them (or even owning them) when they are old and all the things that encompasses.

His observations about design between the different cars are spot on.

But otherwise there's nothing in there that someone who doesn't own one of the cars wouldn't glean from looking up reviews online from when they were new (Daytona apart), and it falls far short of Fchat levels of insight. I don't like criticising journalists because I am one myself, but this was really a case of 'spend a day driving these cars, dash out some thoughts, job done'. And there's not much in terms of critique in there. Why did Ferrari insist the initial media drives of the 599 were across the Continent, knowing the car lacked fun at low speeds? Why was the 550 criticised for its looks and likened to a Supra when it came out? What about prices and demand and production numbers and maintenance and reliability?

Imagine what would happen if Fchat owners got together and drove each others' front-engined V12s..

Anyway, worth buying and reading, but could have been better. Enzo is an odd magazine, seems to be done in their spare time by a bunch of good journalists concentrating their efforts on something else.

Yes, fairly superficial and could probably even have been written without actually driving the cars, but so many comparison articles are a bit like that, usually because it is difficult to get to know a car properly from just one drive. Your article comparing the 550 and the 575 is the exception: it is unusual for a journalist actually to own the cars about which he is writing, for obvious reasons.

Coming back to aesthetics and leaving the Daytona to one side as there was too long a gap between it and the 550 to regard it as part of an evolutionary series, the issue for me is the increasing preponderance of hard edges and angular styling features between the 550 and its later successors, as evidenced in these photos of my 550 next to an F12:
