Finally, they came to their senses and used salt on the roads in Portland! And what a difference from last year!

Oh, I know. I remember flying into PDX last year during one of the snow events, and hey look-- in Vancouver, the streets are all clear and across the river, they're all snowy/icy!

Salt sucks though. I’d rather just have Blizzaks.

Sure, as long as everyone else isn't crashing into you on their bald summer tires.

Several years back our then idiot mayor decided to not use salt on the roads in Seattle. The city of hills came to a stand still with a huge snowfall. It took my wife 4 hours to get home from a Seahawks game on a Sunday evening because of the heavy snow fall.

His rational was the salt would melt with the snow and run down to Elliot bay and pollute the water. Someone forgot to tell the bozo that Elliot bay IS SALT WATER!!!!!!. By the way he did not get reelected, surprise surprise.

    just sayin'

I'll see your mayor with lack of salt, and raise you a mayor who proclaimed after the Snowpocalypse storm, "Portlanders will have to get use to ruff roads", only to find out later he had sold off all the repaving equipment.

Salt is horrible—and on that I agree with Seattle. Use something else.

Kind of makes me wonder how the EPA allows it.

Here is a cut and paste.

How much salt is used each year in the United States?
According to the Salt Institute the United States applied roughly 17,000,000 tons of road salt during the winter of 2013-2014. Other reports say that more than 20,000,000 tons of salt are applied on our roadways every winter.

To put that into perspective, that equates to:

    • 124lbs of salt per person in the United States (there are 322 million)
    • 158lbs of salt for every car or truck on the road in the US (there are 253 million)
    • ~15x more salt than is used each year by the entire US food processing industry (source)

    Out of ****ing control!

No way. I'm entitled to drive on clear roadways 24/7/365 regardless of weather conditions. /sarcasm

I'm currently in PA and seeing some of the holes in body panels is a stark reminder of what salt will do.

I guess you guys are lucky you live in Seattle, then. Personally, I get tired of the roads being a complete mess for days on end.

Did they ever start letting you wash your own cars again? Or is that still illegal?

hahaha. Was this an attempt to throw shade at Seattle when you live in a state that doesn’t alow you to put gas in your own car? :)

I think that was a drought thing during a dry summer. I'm unaware of that being a permanent rule.

Thankfully I live in un-incorporated Snohomish County. Property taxes are 50% of Seattle, no transit fees on car licenses, use as much well water as I please, etc. I do go there and play tourist now and then though.

Plus I do love it when we get big snows that close the roads. I'm quite happy to sit at home for a few days.

Maybe we should also add up all the millions of gallons of deicer sprayed on airplane wings during the winter ;)
I am certain all of that gets recycled, and never “leaks” into the environment.
