If you were having a gathering and knew that several people would be asking to sit in your car, what would be the nicest, most congenial and conciliatory way to refuse. I don't want to come off like a jerk, but most folks just don't get it, and scuffs on the door panels or rockers, skin products on the seats and steering wheel, etc., is just unacceptable. Looking for objective suggestions rather than "it's just a car" responses.

I had a 400 + pound man ask to sit in my F40. He wouldn't even fit in the seats. I had to say no. I was honestly concerned he would tear the fabric seats. It's really awkward.

Practice your *sigh*, insert wherever it feels natural:

Moisturizer, day cream, night cream, makeup, whatever. They get it all over the seats, door panels, etc.

I get this question all the time in car shows and I am very consistent on my response. I simply say that I don’t allow people to sit in my Ferrari due to wear and tear over the years. They appreciate the honesty and still enjoy the car. This even goes for children. I do make exceptions for family and friends of course.

Put the car up on blocks during the event for "maintenance" purposes and state that for safety reasons climbing inside might upset the balance and make the car fall and get damaged.

Simple: If the person is nice, never say "no".

If the person is a jerk, who cares what you say?

The only really good excuse is the soft leather and blue jeans creating wear. So, never wear blue jeans to an event.

If you go to an event, you have to expect this. I've had people actually sit in my car while I was going to the can. I had a lady actually put her purse on my fender and search for her sunscreen in the bag.

On the other hand -- father with their sons are a great.

The absolute best was is for the event to announce not to touch the cars. If it's the same for everyone, you're not a jerk.

Hi guys , my thought -it's only a piece of metal I could care less !! ( remember he who dies with the most toys ,is still dead !!) if someone wants to sit in your car and it brings them joy let them do it. :))) I have probably let well over 500 kids sit in my Ferraris over the last three or four year . It makes them happy!! It makes me even happier !
Even this guy had a smile on his face moments later , PS he had some dirt on his sneakers who cares .

Generally, unless I know how the person is with cars, I'll say something along the lines of "I've learned the expensive way that, No, don't let people sit in the car."
On rare occasions where I'd like a person to experience the view from inside, I have given specific instruction on not sliding down the side bolster, but sitting into the bottom cushion, away from that side bolster - and why, if they ask. "That's kinda stupid/anal/ridiculous/other" will keep me still standing/sitting in the way of them trying to get in, until I can close the door again.
My most memorable example of "why NOT" was a bank VP who said she'd never seen a Ferrari up-close, and while showing it to her, decided to sit in it, resurfacing nearly the entire length of the side bolster by sliding her butt down like a water park ride until she hit the top of the thigh bolster, then scooted back into the seat to turn, dragging her shoe across the sill. That 25+ year old leather got some torture that morning. Looked in her late model Lincoln when I left, and the side bolster was nearly obliterated, like we've all seen on old cars. It's just the way most people seem to treat all cars (well, ANYTHING) these days.

I'm thinking about keeping the doors locked and placing small signs along the B pillars that read "Please Don't Touch". Most folks should comprehend that that statement extends to sitting in the car; or am I giving too much credit to human intelligence?

Sure, if you really want to sit in a 160,000 mile Lexus, go right ahead.

I guess that I am different,

If the person is nice, I offer to allow them to sit in the car.
If the person is not, I flip the fob and walk off.

You could say you had the interior professionally detailed for an upcoming event and want to avoid potentially messing it up until after. If they are nice and understand but you feel bad and then think they would respect it, you could say you changed your mind as long as they can keep it clean. Pretty elaborate story, but I guess that's a way to avoid being direct.

I don't have a Ferrari, but after I detail my own car I don't like people getting in it and I don't like driving it for a few days so it can stay clean for some period of time at least.

If that's such a big deal, I know what I would do. I would not attend these events and go for a nice drive instead.

I found a kid sitting in my 430 at a local cruise night once. His mother was taking pictures of him I asked her how she'd feel if she came back to her car at the mall and I was sitting in it. She gave me a nasty look and walked away with the boy. Since then I'll leave the top down but windows up and doors locked. I don't mind kids in there taking pictures, but just ask.

At a car show, a concorso and even parked while driving around I follow The Mayor's paradigm. If I get a good vibe, while chatting them up, I'll allow it. No kids unattended by a guardian. Heck, I'll even hold the phone & snap a photo. If not a good vibe, then the car was recently detailed and needs to look good for judging. [emoji6] Happily, I've not had to use the latter excuse yet. At car shows, I sit/stand next to the car. If I run off to gawk at other folks cars, I lock it...T

I let people sit in my Dino, I let 'em sit in my 360. I would ask them to check their pockets to make sure they didn't have anything sharp in them, but otherwise as long as they asked nicely, I saw no reason not to.

But everyone is different, so if you are dead set against having anyone sit in the car, I'd park it, lock it, put a big, "HANDS OFF" sign on it, walk away from it, and pray everyone follows your request.

Or say, "I appreciate that you love my car, so do I. I have a hard and fast rule. Only supremely hot, totally naked women under 30 and over 18 get to sit in the car, and then only in the passenger seat."

On second thought, I think if you're this anal about it, you'd be better off taking an Uber to the event and leaving your car or cars home.

The best part is when they inevitably start shoving the gear shift around.. love that. I tell them to stop and get out of the car.
