Here the casino is the best option off the highway. Easy on and off. Now in a small town and the only decent options are chain restaurants. The only decent chain here is Olive Garden, so we are doing that tonight.

Speaking of salads - Last nights Spinach Salad with a scoop of whipped tuna on the side. The lady grabbed this tarragon Dijon mustard, a little spoon in things does wonders.

Previous nights fish tacos with a mango salsa. One of my better efforts.

Q! Grabbed the Cali and did a mini barbecue run.

First stop, BBQ on the Brazos in Creston. Right next to the Motor Sport Ranch. Alas, no driving today. Can't blame them though with triple digit temps.

Wife and I shared a two meat plate.

Side are potato salad. Meh. And something called cornbread salad. Much better. Kind of a riff on Mexican elotes.

Meats. Brisket. Good not great. The ribs were the star.

Stop 2. Flores near Whitney. First & foremost, do not speed anywhere in this vicinity. Popo everywhere. State troopers. County mounties. Local yokels. At a red light, a very nice young young man in a dually 350 rolled down his window to compliment us on the car. I asked him if the place was always crawling with chips. Per him, it's a constant speed trap. At any rate, we made it to Flores without incident. We shared a 1 meat plate, and still needed a doggie bag. Man, are we getting old!

Homemade spicy pickles. Great! Almost too hot, but not quite. Very enjoyable flavor and heat. The banana pudding is also great. The one spoonful I had.

The brisket was better than first place IMO. Potato salad much better. I'm not a fan of mustard, but it had a nice spicy kick of something.

Artsy pic of the Cali from Flores.

I love cornbread salad, but we haven't made it in about ten years. In my area, everyone seems to be making Mexican elotes for summer parties and barbeques.

It's a great summer side item, especially if you can find some good summer corn. There's a place in Dallas that does elotes in a cup. Makes it easier to snack on, especially if you're in the car...T

Wow good eats, T!!!! I was full from a late lunch. Beef dip for lunch and fries. Since we were on the road at it got to 10pm, stopped at a Denny's just off the highway. It was horrible.... Very greasy.

Thanks. I was stuffed. We've been eating light since then - had a salad last night, yogurt this morning. Skipped lunch. Picked up some nice onions and bell peppers at a farmers market this morning. So, I'm feeling skirt steak/fajitas tonight.

Wife & I were on a cross country road trip to San Diego about 15 years ago when we had just moved to Texas. Around 2 AM or so, we rolled into a Danny's in El Paso. Food was horrible. I'm not sure who was scarier, the employees or the other customers! Never been in a Denny's since then.

Now, we do a better job of packing snacks and grub for road trips. Cheaper, better, quicker...T

The Denny's was also slow service wise.... I weighed myself this morning at the gym. I've only gained 2lbs since my last weigh in........ I should have done sushi for dinner..... But I've already prepped my chicken Caesar salad for tonight.

Then there’d be no sour cream or bread!
I had a chicken breast and salad around 9pm.

It’s called the “oh ****, this has to be a lifestyle” realization. After a certain age, it’s too hard to bounce back so there’s never a diet period, every day is clean living interspersed with occasional gluttony :D

Plus I love that combo on a hot day. Very cool tasty and filling.

I like fish..... But now I'm not a big fan of cooked fish....... Still that salmon and trout look tasty.

I had Sunday brunch at a local restaurant. So still full. I'll probably just have a salad for dinner. original plan was to go for brunch at local restaurant and then do some wine tasting. But it rained and the wine tasting wouldn't have been much fun. Doing a raincheck on that part.

Surf and chirp. [emoji2] That looks top shelf, Jason! Oddly, I much prefer trout smoked (then mixed with a little mayonnaise, spices and made into a paté, then spread on crusty bread) versus any other preparation...T

Wine tasting, nice date activity! [emoji2]
Rent a limo, or Uber, next time then you both can drink.

OK, Max, by happenstance, salmon was on the menu tonight. I think I have cooked salmon prep you might like. I started a fire with pecan kindling I had in the yard, in the little Smokey Joe.

Let it burn down a bit.
Slap on two salmon fillets. Salt, that's it.

3 min per side. Less if you like a pink center. With the hot wood fire, it had a nice crust on the outside. One side, perhaps too much.

Nice smoky flavor from the wood fire really complements the flavor of salmon IMO. Would have been cool if I had alder wood, but alas not. Next time, I'll wait a few minutes for fire to burn down further. Or, do 2 to 2.5 min per side. Additionally, this may have worked better with skin-on salmon versus skinless.

Good with a Caprese salad and a chilled grüner veltliner wine.

Past bottles I really like it, so maybe just this bottle or just me today, but it didn’t go down well. I’ll post after I’ve had another.

Now that's how you cook salmon...... Good job T!!! I miss living in Eastern Washington as its a big tree fruit area. You can get all kinds of wood for smoking from apple, pear and cherry tree's...........

I feel like a homemade big mac but don't have time to go to the store for hamburger and buns. So up to real McDonalds for a big mac combo meal. Their fries make a pretty good fast food poutine.............
