    have you never bought a 40+ year old Ferrari before? Particularly an entry level car with owners who don't spend money?

    I know that car from it's previous ownership, I can tell you it's had 3/5ths of f**k all spent on it before the museum got it. 36K miles, no mention in the advert of an engine rebuild = that thing hasn't been apart since knew = sodium valves. The broken rings are a certainty because of irregular use and the too-high piston to bore clearance they had to run in the day.

    I've never seen one of these engines pulled down without finding broken rings.

    No, because you fit modern forged pistons with modern ring metallurgy. The OE ferrari pistons need lots of clearance because they expand so much with heat.
