assume that is the same V12 Merlin that transformed the P51 Mustang into the dominant fighter aircraft in the European theater in WW II. Some may recall that John Fitch was one of just two pilots who shot down a Luftwaffe Messerschmitt 262 jet fighter while flying a Mustang. He told me that he bagged that one as it was landing, fuel exhausted.

Someone will be able to give the correct answer but I have seen the Southward 'Redhead' boat as having a Merlin, Allison or Packard V12.
I don't know for sure but an Allison has been mentioned more than a few times.

Thank you for the picture Steh.

At least I find interesting to exchange post like this.

I don t know so much the performance of John Fitch, but I will check ASAP.

I m trying to find more pictures of #0372AM because I really have no idea if the car was delivered in this configuration or not.

Packard did produce a V12 marine engine that was based on the old Liberty aircraft engine; this engine powered the US PT boats in WWII. Packard also built the Rolls-Royce Merlin aero engine under license during the war, these were used in the later versions of the P51 Mustang. Early P51s used Allisons I believe as did the P38 Lightning.

Historian Michael Lynch was intimately involved with this car a few decades back. Is he lurking about somewhere on Fchat?

I've saw this style nostril configuration on the T2 in a few other photos. It's a little different than what was normally run in 76. Does anyone know if it was something tried in development to the 76 design, or something tried later on, before they went to the NACA duct design in 77?

Another closer photo. It was also on both sides of the NART 512M at Lemans 1971. Looks like a sail boat and scissors and Le something ??

Ofcourse none of the restored cars have this correct.
