Mercedes is still checking that there are no "unknown gremlins" from Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas's Austrian Grand Prix failures that could cause future penalties.

The team has now confirmed that Hamilton suffered a fuel pump failure that led to him losing power.

While that is not an item associated with penalties, the failure and the sudden on-track shutdown could have triggered issues elsewhere in the power unit.

Bottas stopped with a hydraulic issue, and his engine also has to be given a clean bill of health after he too stopped on track.

The only replacement parts that would trigger immediate penalties at Silverstone would be a new energy store or control electronics for Bottas, but any others would push the drivers closer to future penalties.

Mercedes says that the Austrian retirements were not related to each other, or to the new engine specification that was introduced in France.

"They weren't the same failure, they were entirely different," technical director James Allison explained in a Mercedes video clip.

"On Valtteri's car it was a hydraulics failures, starting in the power steering but being felt ultimately in the ability to shift the gears, which caused his car to stop.

"And in Lewis's case it was a failure of the fuel pump, meaning we couldn't deliver fuel to the engine, and so we had to stop there as well.

    Poor Williams LOL - https://www.autosport.com/f1/feature/8319/why-williams-is-dreading-the-british-gp

--Since then the team's fortunes have taken a dive, and this year's FW41 has consistently been the slowest car on the Formula 1 grid. The team's only points so far came with Lance Stroll's eighth place in a high-attrition race in Baku, and Williams is last in the constructors' championship - 12 points behind Sauber.

Just avoiding qualifying on the back row this weekend would be an achievement for Stroll and team-mate Sergey Sirotkin.--

If McLaren had another young driver like Vandoorne they would be blaming the car solely........In their case, Alonso shows that, yes it isn't a great car but Vandoorne is driving very bad......

Williams has a horrible car but put a decent driver in it and i'll be they would have more points

Holy moley. Ferrari reliability, and Honda lack of reliability. That sure inverts the perceived dogma vis-a-vis the road cards from these two manufacturers! Forza!

^^^^^A team engineer explains you have to move Friday back if you want to move Saturday’s running at all. Otherwise you screw over mechanics and engineers (on week three of a triple header). Not a simple move. There are a LOT of engineers who will say that’s not possible... debrief this, pre-quali briefing that, setup change this, tyre selection that blah blah blah

    Power Steering???seriously? I didn't know this.

Get down the gym and grow a pair.

That said, if it sorts the rubbish steering for the next 5 series then I'd be happy. (Far to wayward in bumpy B roads and motorways with high cross winds).

Thanks D interesting, obviously Merc will be really erring on the side of caution, and will be triple checking everything, unusual for both cars to go out like that with different problems.

    also

In Maranello they don‘t want to accept the Mercedes supremacy in Silverstone that exist on paper. Ferrari has not planned to revolutionize the SF71H who is behaving very well but instead continues the development work that so far has gone well.

    https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/137188/horner-unfair-vowles-had-to-confess-to-error

Red Bull's Christian Horner thinks it is "unfair" that Mercedes strategist James Vowles felt he must confess to an error in the Austrian Grand Prix to keep Lewis Hamilton calm.

Vowles made a rare appearance on Mercedes's team radio during last weekend's race to tell Hamilton that it was his mistake to not bring the four time world champion into the pits during the virtual safety car period.

Horner said he does not understand how such a situation came to pass - and questioned why Vowles needed to be singled out.

"It's always difficult to know the intricacies of other teams but the one thing you have to do as a team is win and lose as a team," said Horner.

"That's why we hardly at all, in success or failure, talk about individuals, because that puts an unfair amount of scrutiny and pressure on that individual.

"Certainly our philosophy is that as a team, it's collective responsibility rather than an individual.

"Of course there has to be accountability, but it's something that's dealt with in the right environment, behind closed doors, and not in a public forum."

Horner thinks it equally strange that Vowles needed to intervene at all just to motivate Hamilton.

"I have never worked with Lewis and I don't know what makes him tick and what doesn't, but it's a fairly bizarre thing to need to do for somebody - to throw themselves under the bus to motivate a driver to go faster from fourth back into the lead," he added.

(GO CHRISTIAN!! says Max :) I love this pic that Autosport keeps next to so many articles this week. Again - For Bas!! :) Thats the Happy Max photo!)

Horner explained he would never have allowed such a situation to play out at Red Bull. "It's not the way I operate," he said.

"My view and my role as team principal of this team is that you're here to protect your workforce, to make sure they're represented in the best possible way - that's on the good days and on the bad days."

While Horner has questioned the circumstances around Mercedes's choices in Austria, the Brackley-based squad's technical director James Allison has heaped praise on Vowles.
