So did you win the lottery or something really fantastic within the last five months? Since you worked like a dog for 20 years just to be able to realize your dream and now 5 months later you can buy 10 of them. I need your business advice if nothing else please.
Well, sounds as if you did your proper diligence, and weren't punching above your weight to get into a 599. So, the answer is - basically - you've had a horrible, regrettable, and very unusual experience for a modern, fully-inspected Ferrari. I would guess, given the vast wealth and customer base in Dubai, the local Ferrari dealer/service center would be fairly well-vetted by Maranello, but it does sound sketchy this business of "parts are always missing." As in, they're charging you to replace bits you thought were there, or you're getting it back with things missing that were there before? Sounds like an all-around bad experience, and a shame if it's turned you off to your dream marque. That said, why is a Toyota the alternative? Acura NSX, Corvette (how easy are those to come by in Dubai?), Nissan GT-R, used Lambo/Aston, etc? If you wanted something fast and exotic, don't see why a bad dealer and individual car experience would push you into the most-mundane option.
Worked like dog for 20 years, had successful exit strategy to the tune of $250MM. It happens. As for the car. Pieces found missing every time it ends up at the dealer says someone didn't really do a PPI. sjd
I had an Aston Martin Vantage before the 599. Lovely car. Had very minor issues, but nothing noteworthy and no drama like the Ferrari... There are no Acuras in the UAE, plenty of nice Corvettes, Some GT-Rs, and plenty of Lambos (not a fan except of the much older models 400 GT, LM002, etc.). Toyota because it's drama free and you get your money's worth...
I thought this wasn't about getting your money's worth? If money is no object to you (which I am very jealous about btw) then yeah sell the "lemon" and get another F-car and fugget about it!
Any car in high temperature extremes such as Dubai is going to play hell with seals, and it sounds like that is the issue with your 599. Sort the issues out and enjoy the car. Or buy one from a less extreme climate that won't have seal deterioration, but you will pay more upfront. There is an beautiful example local to me in the for sale ads. Just FYI.
Sorry to hear about your issues Roger. From my experience, Ferraris are not cars you can really beat on without major expense. Not sure if your car was beat on or not but Dubai temperatures sure take their toll. Hindsight is 20/20, the 599 is fairly reliable but the F1 system might keep you up at night a bit. Like others have recommended, look at an F12 since the dual clutch transmission is much more reliable. You can also purchase an extended warranty from Ferrari so if something happens it's covered by them. Or if you want something more classic, a 550 since it's stick.
^ This. My daily driver is a Lexus LS460, it is the most reliable (and boring) car you can buy. I have had no issues with it, but I am on a Lexus forum and occasionally you read about horror stories much worse than yours. Sometimes stuff just happens. You had no trouble with your AM, I can introduce you a few people who have. Sorry you had such a bad experience, but that's life. I wish you good luck with your next vehicle.
Never had a Range Rover, but heard some real horror stories about new ones! Happens to some vehicles.
You cant really judge a car company by a used car that was probably treated poorly by the previous owner. Thats irrational. Having said that, Ferraris (especially pre-2010ish) are notoriously iffy on quality. My first Ferrari was a used 355 and it was a bad purchase. Lots of issues. But I was just as much to blame as i didnt do proper research or proper PPI before buying it. I accept my responsibility for the bad purchase and didnt condemn the entire company for that one experience.
I've wrenched, owned, and raced Ferrrari for over 40 years. You are 100% correct. A ferrari is a piece of junk. But we torture ourselves anyway like a bad girlfriend you keep returning to. That's just the way it is. Your Toyota will never have legacy sticky parts making a livelihood for others. Your Toyota will never have a DCT or E-diff failure. Your Toyota will run 100k miles and probably never leave you stranded and your A/C will always work. My chances of making it 3000miles across country in a 20 year old Toyota of unknown service history is greater than a showroom fresh Ferrari.
The previous owner is a car collector; owns more than 80 cars. I doubt he had time to "beat" the car, and he always maintained it at Ferrari, sparing no expense (i studied every invoice, checking even the chassis number to make sure they were not made up, or for another car). This was also one of the reasons why i bought it: full transparency about the history. And i chose the car because i loved its shape. My favorites are F40 and 288 GTO, but they are out of reach, and probably even more unreliable that the 599. The F12 is gorgeous, but the power is too much to handle i think... And the more electronic you have in a Ferrari, the more you are in trouble... At least when it's analog you can figure out the problem... Italians and electricity... I remember this from my Maserati days... And yes I can judge a whole company based on my experience, because fundamentally, everything you read out there about Ferraris is correct. Ferraris are NOT reliable. They leak, they rust, the plastic sucks, the finishing is poor.. engine are gearbox are great of course but the rest is garbage... The point is this: i accept the sticker price, i accept the exorbitant/ highway robbery charges for maintenance... What i do not accept, is to have a car that is so unpredictable and fragile, you can not even take it on a 2 hour road trip without worrying that you will come back in an Uber (who will probably be driving a nice Toyota and making fun of you). I guess these cars are better on a poster on my bedroom wall, than in my garage. Unless you are married to a mechanic. And for the record, i appreciate all the comments on this thread, i can see that you guys are really passionate about cars
How is an F40 out of reach if you can afford 10 599s? You could work on the F40 yourself, too. It's not that complex of a car.
Waaaaaahhh waaaahh I don’t like my Ferrari everybody. This winging and whining is about as entertaining as Elton Ham-Dashian’s constant crying. #lovewins guys I’m selling my crap 599. Peace out. It sounds like you should have been reading Ferrari Chat BEFORE buying the car.
