I'll drive these 2 cars back-to-back this weekend, but if I recall, the Lamborghini 'box was sweeter if in good health but more injury-prone, and at a certain point in it's life it begins to whine like a dentist's drill! The ZF box feels a bit more precise, more rifle-bolt in feel.

Reports to come, I'm being sidetracked by work

The slight difference in gear ratios between the early 1985 cars as stated in the factory DGM, and the 1987 cars as stated in the FIA Homologation documents

Why???? Two filler caps and two tanks and interlinked pipe behind engine ...... what does happen is the pipe and its holders can get squashed when re fitting the engine so they dont fill together as quick as they should but otherwise there is no need to do this.

The thing I like about the FIA Homologation papers is that the information is independently verified and certified by FISA

Stephen, this must be a common problem because all 3 of the LP400 that I owned over the years required filling from both sides to achieve maximum fuel capacity

    Alex,

Significant difference, which I already knew from experience, but needed to be reminded.

Again, the works upgraded to the ZF for good reason.

As I mentioned, the later gearbox is definitely more precise in application of the individual gears, so you change with a bit more confidence, and you can slot into any gear a bit more quickly.

Until it is thoroughly warmed, the older 'box just needs a deliberate & patient hand with 2nd, especially when changing down from 3rd to 2nd. That said, if you are experienced with driving classic or vintage cars, its not an issue, it's part of the pleasure of doing something right.

Your experience mirrors mine exactly. The old Lamborghini box (when in good nick) is very satisfying to use as it rewards mastery. The ZF box is by far the more "Billy proof" of the two. 30+ years on, I've never personally experienced a bad ZF gearbox in a Countach.

Obviously, if you havent had the opportunity to compare Countachs with the Lamborghini and the ZF box, you'd think they are all one way or another.

    "Billy Proof", I like that!
