I'm looking for a "totaled", "wrecked" or "salvaged" 348 with a manual transmission for a race car project. I'll need the engine, transmission, shift linkage and all the bits to make it run.

A low milage 348 that had a front-end accident would be best. Or if you know of a Ferrari dismantler on the west coast, that would help too. A manual 355 would be my second choice, if I can't find a 348.

Thanks in advanced for any help or leads!

    Randy

    Thanks for all your replies.

Before I start calling around, what's a fair price for a low milage (under 20K) 348 or 355 engine with a gated trans? Because I have no idea. Also, I will need everything... engine, trans, computers, tank, shifter, rod, wires, etc.

It's all going into one of these...

Hi Randy, that looks like loads of fun!

Question about using the 348 trans... I know lots of people have raced the 348 but it would be interesting to hear from the experts on whether an alternative would be better for what you want to do.

    15k engine no core
    10 transmission
    5 computers

If you wait for best deal you could likely save about 30 percent but might take a year to aquire

The transmissions are on ebay at 4k all.day limg never selling.
I gave one away for 2k.

FYI the F1 355 trans is Identical to a manual cars trans.

The only difference is a little rod that conects to the linkage.

355 transmission yes, dime a dozen, lots for sale. 348 transmission not so much. Rarely a good one for sale and run $6-7k. Unless something has changed recently. I have a row of 348 transmissions lined up under my bench I’m going to rebuild if I ever get time, so if any of you have a complete 348 trans you’d let go for $2k contact me.

Did we not discuss this before are the shift forks different as well or something based on the parts diagrams.

I guess as far as op is concerned either would work.

I looked at building an SLC before looking to buy a 348 and I am wondering what the reasoning is for a 348 motor in an SLC. There are a million motors that are cheaper and way more powerful than the like 300hp 3.4L. LS motors are played out... but they're played out because they can't be beat. There are even Subaru lawnmower motor swaps in SLCs that would crush too.

The sound! The beautiful (with test pipes) Ferrari sound!!! I don't care about the HP. My GT40 has almost 600HP and to me, it's way too much. It's fun on the track, but on the streets I can't get it out of first gear. I'm more interested in fun, sound and drivability.

Does anyone have a 355 engine and trans for sale? Would that be a better choice?

I really would love the 348 drivetrain in a Superlite. Great powerband for the light car.
The 355 you will need to do a lot more shifting

Agree with the sound of the engine, we have a radial sr8 rolling chassis in he workshop we though about dropping a Ferrari drive train in , but if you going to use a 348 I would ditch the obsolete ecu and at least make a new loom and aftermarket set up

What about using a 355 driveline, instead of a 348 driveline?

Is the purpose mixed use or track only? Meaning, do u want to register it or just tow it to the track and back?

Both! I would register it under the California SB100 law (smog exempt) for the street, and drive it to track days at WIllowsprings.

Sticking with original Ferrari bits the best engine gearbox combo is F119 (348 engine) + 6 speed out of a F355. You will get the best performance out of the F119 with a stand alone ECU, custom wiring harness, individual throttle bodies, and coil on plugs.
