Central Market in Giddings, hooked me right up with a great brisket as I flew thru town last Thursday..

Heads up "Blast from The Past" next door, is going out of business.
Man, there's some cool clothes in there, will miss them!

OK, so here is what I did with yesterday's leftovers. I put some chips in the smoker box and put the meats in foil on the top rack. turned one burner on the lowest setting and warmed/smoked the stuff for about 30 minutes. Perfect temp and even more flavor in the ribs. Dried the sausage out a little but that is what pickles and onions are for on the sandwich and I added their sauce.

That was $100 worth of BBQ but worth it. Definitely will be visiting It's All Good again in the near future.

Thread resurrection, its time for BBQ Tour Part Deux!

I'm headed to Austin for 2-days of BBQ chasing in September...but its not too early to begin planning...

I have a rental car one day (Sept 14) and will hit Muellers for sure and then TBD.

The second day (Sept 16) will be ride-sharing around Austin BBQ joints.

If anyone is around and wants to chow down, please join me!

What's the latest intel from the boots on the ground down there?

(I have the 2017 updated Texas Monthly in hand, so I have their latest thoughts)

I went out of my way on Friday to eat at Kreuz Market in Lockhart on Friday. They’ve modernized: now they have knives, forks, and BBQ sauce. It’s still my favorite though I want to try Blacks and Smittys. There’s just never enough time.

+ obligatory picture. :) I always order the burnt ends of the brisket and I'm never disappointed. Don't know why I get sausage, it's good, but it's not better than the brisket. I should learn.

The Blacks in Austin on Guadalupe is the real deal, my phone burned and I lost pictures, but I joined a MotoGP team in there that weekend!
The line is never as long as the "more famous" place!!

Now Terry Blacks on Riverside is a family off shoot, and not the same recipes as Blacks, in Lockhart (which actually supports the Austin location)

Did you ever hit the Central Market in Luling?
Further off your path than Lockhart, almost to San Antonio

He will be on the list for sure.

I went to the Black's in Lockhart...will add this one in Austin. Thanks!

Its still "on my list for someday"...not sure if it will make the cut this time given the distance...

^There are two good Q places in Luling, so makes it an easier sell. But, it's a bit of a hike. On a recent trip, we stopped of at Hays County in San Marcos. Good, but I am not sure it's worth a 1 hour drive. Don't forget a slice of pie in Hutto!

WHAT!!! They have done the unthinkable.

FYI - Noticed a Blacks is going into New Braunfels where Rudy's was on the corner of Loop 337 and Common. Not open yet.

My itinerary is set for BBQ Tour Part Duex on Sept 15 weekend:

    Day 1:
    Louie Mueller's
    La BBQ (pre-ordered)
    Kerlin
    Kreuz
    Black's
    Smitty's

    Day 2:
    John Mueller Black Box
    Stiles Switch
    Micklewaith
    Dinner at Freedmans

Sadly schedule doesn't allow me to get out to Snow's on Saturday and I missed the Franklin pre-order available window by 1 day earlier this month. Lots of repeats here (only new one's are Black Box, Stiles Switch and Freedmans - the Day 1 is repeats because I'm bringing a group of college buddies and want to take them to those places).

If you have a "must try" idea for the Austin + 1 hour driving area, please reply!

(Luling will have to wait for BBQ Tour Part 3)

    Thanks.

If you can make stiles switch happen on a Wednesday, the special du jour is smoked prime rib. And it’s amazing.

In Lockhart, I personally like Kreuz. Have been to Blacks in Lockhart, and did not like it there. However, recently went to the new Blacks location in New Braunfels, and really enjoyed it. Have not been to Mueller or Freedmans.

I've only been to Kreuz. It's so good, I see no reason to try Blacks or Smittys because if they're not as good, I will have missed a chance to go to Kreuz! :)

I’m an extra moist charred brisket guy and lived in the Austin/Hill Country area for 7 years and hit most of these places. I still think The Salt Lick makes the best.

The only thing I don't like about the Salt Lick, is the mustard based BBQ sauce, other then that, they make good BBQ and the place has a great atmosphere.

I ate at the salt lick for ribs and it was good. I ordered some shipped to me and it was so bad I threw it away. I guess you have to be there. I'll have to try their brisket. But is Salt Lick Smoked BBQ or grilling?? Looks like grilling to me.

I don’t really use sauce (except a little on ribs now and then) so can’t really comment. My fav sauce is Stubbs, but not by much over anything else.

    Never had BBQ shipped.

Their brisket gets smoked from the oak and drippings. But I would call it lightly smoked, and if you prefer a heavily smoked then there are other options.

BTW, made a detour to Angelo’s in Fort Worth during my last trip to Dallas. It’s worth a drive if you’re in the area. Solid top BBQ.
