Lou, as one of the many designers of the 777 (inboard flap components, in my case), I thank you for that.

But I still say that the Japanese blew it when they laid out the runways at Narita. None of those crosswind landings should have been necessary.

So, both runways are E/W... would N/S orientation help that situation?

Great footage and great technique by the pilots. As I was watching that and looking at the 777 landing gear as they touched down my thoughts went back to the landing gear guys sweating the torque loads on the oleo and getting the loads equalized on the three wheeled truck when the brakes were applied. It was interesting to see the slow measured process that the engineers went through to get all the "what-iff's" addressed.

Not that extreme; based on all the video footage I've seen, the runways should have been rotated about 30 degrees to the right. Looking at Narita on satellite photos, I believe that could have been done.

The runways are 16-34. If they had rotated the whole airport so that the runways were 18-36, I think everything would have been better. I have never seen videos of crosswinds blowing in any other direction.

Narita is my least favorite airport to fly into for exactly this reason!

Wow, reminds me of Stapleton back in the old days, just add blowing snow. Those guys and gals earned their paycheck on those landing.

Question for you guys. How tempting is it to slam the deck? I gotta guess it is pucker time while you wait and wait for the wheels to hit.

You are correct, I was reading the diagram wrong... not E/W runways.

News: They're adding a third runway... exactly the same orientation... 16-34, or close... don't they do any due diligence?
