I'm a new Ferrari owner having purchased a 2015 458 Spider with 1600 miles from Ferrari of Houston in January. I love the car and have no plans of selling it anytime soon. However, I really have a hankering for a V12 to add to my collection. I have loved the F12 since the day I saw the first promotional video. I was disappointed in the 812 when I first saw it but usually with all redesigns, they tend to grow on you.

Now I'm liking the 812 better and contemplating sending a deposit for a car that I'll probably get in 2 years. But it will be new, it will be my design and I'll know the history.

So should I take the plunge? Is the 812 that much better than an F12 for a car that I'll drive 1-2k miles per year?

Of course! Did they tell you that you are for sure getting an allocatio? If you are, you are lucky with only one car purchase history.

I find 812 design much better than F12.
    It is better car.
    As for depreciation, who cares....
Everything depreciates, not just cars, over time and use.
One buy cars to drive and enjoy.
If you are driving only 1-2k miles per year, my advice is don't buy any.
Build 812 as you like, drive 50k miles for 5 years and then you will be happy with your depreciation in the end.
After all, V12 FR Ferraris, driven hard for 5 years, will hold values quite well.

It should be a decision of which design do I prefer, and would I want to build my own car or buy the one that is close.

Well that is the other issue I have. So At first the dealer pretty much said for a first time buyer it might be difficult. I told him I already have a Ferrari and he said that helps a lot. He made it seem that because I’m relatively young (under 50), they take into consideration how many cars I have the potential of buying. Part of me thinks it’s bait and switch. They have my non refundable deposit and I could end up waiting 3 years.

I’d drive it 1-2 k per year because I have other cars I also drive. My MB C63s cab is my go to car right now. In 2 summers, I put on 5000 miles. I’ll never drive a Ferrari to work so that’s out. My wife and I enjoy going out to dinner or winery’s in the Summer. I drove the 458 1000 miles so far this year. Also remember I’m in Western Pa and our driving season for cars like this is basically May through November. I’d like to go to more car cruises and charity events with other super car owners but So many of the people just aren’t my style. I’m a pretty reserved person and not flashy nor do I like braggers. Maybe if I actually go, I’d think differently!

Jason, if I were you, I would think this way.
Is 812 collectable and will I keep it for a very very long time, as it will be the last none assisted V12 FR Ferrari?
If so, only then, I will put my deposit down and tell the dealer that within 2 years I should have the car or I should have the first refusal rights on buying whatever used 812 dealer might come up with.
If money is no subject up to some point, then I will also tell them I want to tailor made 812 which might shorten the wait period.

Without being certain the 812 as collectable, then putting deposit and wait for 2-3 years is waste of time unless one has money to throw and don't care for long.

I don’t view them as being collectible. I want it to drive, to look at and have the sense of personal satisfaction that I reached a life’s goal. My first wife got cheated in life by being diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer and was gone in 7 months at 39 years old. We have 4 kids and the youngest was 4 at the time. It has now been 10 years.

That is always in the back of my mind and if it were to happen to me, I don’t want to have any regrets.

    So sorry to hear that.
I am also around your age, and my concept of new Ferrari is buy fast and drive hard on track and sell them fast.
I want a car now and enjoy it while I can.
I don't want to wait any longer at all.
After all, I cant buy time.
For that sense, F12 is a very very good choice. It is not 812 but it is as good V12 FR Ferrari.

I'm in the same situation lol. I found a black on black on black 812 SF a little over sticker. The other choice is a SL65 Black Series at a phenomenal price and condition. The F12 Berlinetta is around the same price as the SL. The 812 SF hasn't grown on me at all. The F12 was mean and beautiful at the same time. I see the 812 like a viper and a corvette mixed. But having the chance for a brand new car and I'll be the first owner is something that is beyond appealing to me. Never owned a Ferrari so this would be amazing.

Take either car. Since you state that you drive very few miles, you won’t risk much in terms of depreciation in either choice.

Very sad to learn about your wife. That’s a devastating and life altering experience for a family.

For me, it reminds me about what is truly important in life. Material possessions, even a Ferrari, don’t compare.

I think the 812 is an all time favorite. When you drive it, you know you have all 12 working for you. The engine the steering the suspension. Amazing car, amazing Ferrari. Just to think I have an updated Enzo engine in the hood is too cool!!

Your post asked the question "Should I take the plunge?" I think you've answered your own question by sharing the above thought process (sorry about your loss). Moreover, I can't imagine anyone having the ability and opportunity of having an 812 SF in their garage regretting that decision!! I have experienced, and I believe others here have as well, excruciating personal loss of loved ones and hearing terrible news about friends, neighbors, employees, etc. As we get older mortality becomes more in the forefront of our minds and, as a result, we all want to increase our dopamine levels as much as possible and SOONER rather than later.

    Go for it!

I purchased a 488 to move up in the pecking order. Drove it 1,800 miles until our 812 came in. I have to tell you the V12 is like nothing at all!!!

I don’t mind a long wait as long as I have something interesting to drive in the meantime...

Have you considered a Lusso for in the meantime? V12 with more seats might make the wait easier.

To the OP, just buy the technically new 812 available on the used market now. Don't wait for another 2-3 years.

How much premium is it commanding now?

Jason, very very sorry about your loss.

If the budget allows for it I suggest you consider taking an F12b out of the dealer's inventory, or have them find one for you Then you could drive it for the next two years while you wait for your 812. You will have that car on your profile and it will help. Or get a V12 GTC4. That will depreciate more though. The idea is you can drive something now while you wait. There will be depreciation, but you will enjoy a V12 Ferrari every moment you want. Get the 812 order in writing as part of the deal, they need to take a deposit. Put your spec in with the dealer. Now, if you love the cars and if they never come through and you want one, in 2 years time there will be more 812 on the market anyway and you'll have more choices. Or you just keep the F12...

Thanks for all the well wishes about the loss of my wife. As I said it was 10 years ago and I am happily remarried. I felt then and still do think now it should have been me instead of her. But it wasn't and who am I to question the Universe? So like many of us that have had difficult times, it makes you think differently about things.

I did consider an F12 prior to the 812 but it will probably only be to drive next summer. Is it really worth $50k+ to waste for one summer? Plus I still have the 458 and my goto car, the C63S. My dealer feels pretty strongly that I'd have it for the Summer after next. That puts it at about 1.5 years away or spring 2020.

What I don't know is that if I don't yet have a rapport with the dealer and give them a deposit, am I going to be bumped out of line for a customer that has cred? I've noticed that new or used, the Ferrari dealers aren't actively pursuing my business. I would think that the value for them long term is for people that are churning new and used units.

I guess we shall see. I think I will place the order and see how it plays out.

There are several barely used 812SF on the market. One I saw with like 22 miles. This may be a viable option for you.

At this point if I were to buy a spec that wasn't "mine", I'd get an F12 before I bought an over MSRP 812. If I'm paying $450k for a car, I want it to be exactly what I pick.
