How well would Hamilton do in the Schumacher/Hakinnen period?

Some more impressive stats from the past:

In 1954, Mercedes won 4 of the 6 GPs they entered (66% - they only entered the 6 last GPs of the season)
In 1955, Mercedes won 5 of the 6 GPs they entered (83% - there were 7 GPs that season, including the Indy 500 which they didn't enter. At the end of that year, they withdrew from racing due to the Le Mans disaster.)

 

2014 thru 2016 Mercedes were locked in with a 100hp advantage because of a 2yr development of this hybrid formula...fair enough, they saw it coming & thanks to the token system. In 2017, the token system ended, but to actually make-up 100hp difference in F1 takes years. Like I said, any of the top 6 drivers then or now could do just as good or better in any of the W0x's. P1 during Quali with a 75% plus you'll win almost any race......please.

 

I'm sure when Hamilton replaced Schuey he asked for fewer buttons on the steering wheel which isn't what one would expect from the younger generation but probably a throwback to when one could do more fine tuning to report back.

You failed to follow the conversation as it developed, got upset when I pointed out that the post you complained about was perfectly reasonable, and then got some more kicks in there about the moderation standards. As Kraftwerk points out, you were pretty unhappy with this thread from Post #2, so I wonder why you stuck with it. Nobody is forcing you to open it.

Seriously...again!!! Does any of these answers relate to the original question "Has Mercedes scored more points in F1 history than Ferrari? If not how are they the most dominate?" where he questions how a car can be most dominate when the brand (that was even absent for more than 50 years) has not scored more points than Ferrari, and you still think this is a reasonable question
And when I think this is a stupid question with the intention of trolling what does that have to do with the development of the thread when people give a reasonable answer on what is still a stupid question?

 

It is clear that ktu had a different interpretation of defining dominance than others in the thread. He was thinking about defining a car's dominance as the performance of a marque over all of F1's history, whereas other (more pragmatic) posters were defining dominance as the performance of related cars from each marque within each era of technical regulations.

I disagree with ktu's premise completely, I think he was misinformed and it was an incorrect assessment of the sport. However, after some discussion, several others seemed to have illuminated the topic with constructive and substantiated debate. What isn't constructive is you howling "troll!" every time there's a question you personally regard as uninformed, stupid, biased against your fandom, or simply something you don't want to see.

Please take note of the description of piling on, see the advice to use the ignore feature (it works very well in XenForo) for those you find intolerable, and report trolling posts without responding to them (i.e. "don't feed the troll"). Incessantly publicly accusing people of being trolls in thread after thread creates a toxic atmosphere, is counterproductive because it actually encourages real trolls to join the site to annoy you, and it could be moderated as a form of trolling itself.

Toto and Lewis have both said that Lewis’ strength is not in developing the car, but simply getting in and going fast. Nico was the one setting the car up.

 

What i'm saying is Hamilton has helped develop the hybrid era Mercedes to what it is now, as Schumi/Rosberg did. Schumacher is not the only driver that can help develop a car. Engineers need drivers, and drivers need engineers. Every driver in F1 plays a role in developing the car. Engineers don't make random adjustments or developments without feedback from the driver. That's why team mates may have different setups, because they communicate what they need to get faster. They can't make correct developments unless the driver goes out and communicate what is happening or not happening. All the driver can do is give feedback to the engineers, the engineers are the ones who actually physically "develops" the car. Lewis would be no help in designing the PU for Merceds. Schumacher would be no help on writing the traction control software on his Bennetton.

 

I do not deny Hamilton is a great driver but he is not a car developer in the same league as Schumi, Senna, Prost or even Vettel and Rosberg. With the simulators the engineers run all the parameters. There are only a few drivers who can articulate to the engineers what fine tuning is required for car set up. Schumi helped fine tune the 360 and 430 and I think the 599 as well. Senna fine tuned the NSX. Hamilton has not fine tuned the AMG One or whatever it will be called that is to be released. AMG has considered that his input is not required otherwise they would have used him and used that for marketing.

Was listening to an interview with a Derek Daly on the F1 and Done podcast and he stated that it is well known the paddock that the Mercedes became the Diva that it was because Nico had left the team and Lewis does not know how to provide the necessary feedback to set up the car and Bottas does not have the skill level that Nico does. Daly has strong respect for Lewis, just not for car developement or set up. No great sin, Ronnie Peterson was awesome to watch but completely hopeless in car set up.

 

With such little testing allowed now, I'm surprised how well they are able to set up the car. Obviously, somebody at Mercedes knows what they are doing. So, if it isn't the drivers, who is it?

probably the engineers, they have been awesome. The lack of testing keeps other teams from catching up, they say it is to keep costs down, but if the FIA really cared about costs they would have never gone down the current crap turbo-hybrid power unit formula rabbit hole...

 

That's part of his talent to maintain good relations with the management.
