Well, we receive our first 488 parts to refinish....

The coating is not sticky, but it has failed and is peeling off...

This is an example of clear soft touch applied over a high gloss black and a lack of a chemical bond between the two different coatings.

More to come once we strip, refinish and laser etch the graphics :)

On a 488 it is still under warranty. Why not get a new piece instead??

I actually recommend that as only the one button was effected. The party choose to send us both to refinish. Perhaps only the entire wheel is offered. Not sure the details but we will be refinishing 2 buttons.

    Wow, that is not good.
Do you think the coatings on 488 switches are the same soft touch paint as per the previous models?

What makes it even worse IMO is that it is a high beam button, how often does that get pressed??? Makes me wonder about the others.....

Maybe there was some kind of contaminate when they were coating this one. Still, when will Ferrari stop using that rubberized coating that causes everyone so much grief?

Different sub contractors used different coatings so it's hard to say. This is probably a case where the switch got scratched and they the coating broke open and started to peel.

Not very nice to learn that a car that is 2 years old at best has these issues already. Glad Dave is on top of things.

Is the fix a permanent, one time intervention (like nasty sticky buttons like in the 355 for instance), or is it bound to be a recurring issue?

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

    Hi Nuno,

we will be stripping the parts to bare plastic and refinishing like we do for all other parts, with a hard touch coating. Our coating will never fail so once we are done, it will be a permanent fix.

If find it amazing to see this kind of coating failure whether it be the coating, preparation with suitable primer or the plastic used in the part itself. Hope the plastic isn't recycled raw material as this would be an issue.

I supply resins here in Australia and if a customer came to me with this I sure as hell would have given them a solution a Long Long time ago.

This has nothing to do with the plastic, it's the coating for sure and possibly a non compatible chemistry of the base and the clear soft touch or a lack of soft touch application within the chemical time window.

Very sad indeed to hear of this issue on a 488 GTB. Speechless at this point regarding this matter since it would be unacceptable on a Toyota Corolla after two years let alone a Ferrari.

Not covered. I tried that on my 458 when it was in warranty and they basically told me to go pound sand.

Cosmetic issues are generally not covered under warranty, for any brand. Difficult to prove it wasn't the customer that did it and dealers would normally skirt it to keep the client happy. Ferrari dealers can't as they simply don't have the customer count as your local Honda dealer to absorb such a cost, or even try to fly it under the radar.

Like pretty much all Ferrari, many common interior parts are used on a LF. Many of these are the same as the 458 and you can bet you're bottom dollar they will get sticky.

Agreed , but for 300 plus grand they won’t fix it and for 3,000,000 $ they do ? I’m just curious.

I doubt they do regardless of the cost. I do know in a couple cases, some minor refinishing was covered by FNA as considered good will. I suspect dealers on occasion would do the same.
