Ferrari will usually do a major update, both styling-wise and performance-wise on a given model. This thread is purely focusing on the styling aspect.

    The 308 became the 328
    The 348 became the 355
    The 360 became the 430
    The 458 became the 488
The Testarossa became the 512TR/F512 M
The 550 Maranello became the 575
The F12 became the 812 Superfast

I have always preferred the original design, except in the case of the 348/355. I think the 355 is one of the most beautiful cars Ferrari has produced.

In other cases, I feel that Ferrari over-styles the updated cars. The biggest example of this is from the original Testarossa (I like the twin external mirrors over the original single high mount) to the F512 M. I don't care how much the values of the F512 M are at, I think it is way over styled. Trying to add the circular tail lights was way over the top, as are the over styled wheels. I find the same with the new 812 over the F12 - way over styled.

    What are your preferences?

I'm part of a very interesting party that thinks the 360 looks better than the 430, but I'd rather have a 430. I can't imagine there's many like me haha! I absolutely agree with you with the 512M. I tried to like it but it's just got too many things going on with the bodywork.

I prefer the 512 BB update to the 365 GT4 BB original. That is probably the only instance of preferring an evolution over an original. Counter to the original poster, when viewing the (late)348 and 355 side by side in the flesh, my preference lies with the more aggressive lines of the original 348, versus the softened 355. 355 is ultimately prettier (and I believe photographs better), however the 348 satisfies my tastes more, with a look that is more Ferrari-like. I prefer the original Testarossa to the 512TR as well, by a slight margin.

Hmmm, I've always seen the V8 threads as:
    308-328-348 (original is best!)
355-360 (not much between them; maybe lean a bit towards 360)
430-458-488 (probably prefer the 458 overall)

I agree with you about the 355, kizdan. I shied away from buying one because of the mandatory service.
I also prefer the styling of La Ferrari over the Enzo. The Portofino out shines the California as well. IMO

The supercars are all their own unique chassis, which is why they aren't included in this discussion. Completely agree with you on the Portofino over the California.......

The extreme styling usually grows on me over the years. Even the absurd 512M has become more appealing. Just get comfortable with it and fondly look at the sign of the times history I guess.

Although that Pontiac Aztek abomination is still horrid!

Its funny. The Aztek is not so bad compared to a lot of whats being made today. I think all those LExus SUVs are way uglier

I can usually see what they’re trying to accomplish with the newer models.
There’s usually attributes I appreciate from both.ie I like the headlights and larger air ducts on the 430,but the gentler curves and wider/lower illusion of the 360 still has appeal.
Similarly with the 308 and 328, a bit of modernization and “cleaning up”.

I never got the 348...always seemed like a baby-Testarossa without the drama that’s essential to that car. Like what a car collector with a TR would buy his trophy wife, in those days. No offence to anyone. as such, I kind of lost interest in Ferrari’s during the 348/355 era, so I don’t have much opinion on them. The move to the modern era is what sparked my passion in Ferrari’s again.

The 456M was better in every respect compared to the original 456, and has a far better looking front end.

I'm the total opposite, I like all the evolutions over the base. The only exception is the 512M's front and rims (I prefer the 512TR's)
That said, I would still prefer the 512M overall.

328 is much better looking than the 308, same with the 355 to 348 and definately with 430 to 360 and 512TR (not the M) to Testarossa. 458 and 488 are equal. That's what I think :)

For the TR-512TR-512M I think the 512 TR was the best looking version by far. Followed by the TR and lastly the 512M. The 512M tried to combine too many different things and just looks awkward.

The Nissan Juke replaced the Aztek as the "most ugly" thing on the road; now that the much-better-looking Kicks has replaced it, it remains to be seen who will wear the "most ugly" tag now.
