Not a fan of the testing in general, but if required you can’t beat the Self Service Kiosk OBDII emissions testing program. A beautiful top down early morning foggy drive, 5 minute test, no one touches the car, long way home. Best emissions test experience ever.

They do not stations like this in Illinois. What state are they located?

Maryland. They have the regular stations but also these kiosks for cars 2006 or newer.

    Cool.
Yet likely pointless. So few junkers on the road these days and most modern cars require little maintenance. They should focus on big diesel trucks instead.
Here, garages spent tens of thousands of dollars on testing machines that will never be re-couped

I used to think the key was revenue and jobs. Well with the KIOSK the jobs part is out. It is pointless.

Using the Kiosk requires knowledge of your OBDii port. My guess is that a mere fraction of people around here would be able to successfully use the KIOSK. I was dreading a line full of people trying to plug the test monitor into their USB port...

Wow interesting, looks just like a gas station. They definitely don’t have any of those in CA.

They have those in Oregon, but they are inside the regular inspection stations, with testing only available when the station is open. They are semi self service, but you still have to wait in line. You plug it in and run the test yourself, but there is still an attendant for every two kiosks. And if you pass you still have to go to the counter to get your tags from the attendant.

I think the coolest thing about the Maryland way would be not having to go during set business hours.

You can’t have it in California. Because the car must also pass visual. You can not have aftermarket (non-CARB) Cai or any aftermarket cat (must be OEM)

Federalism vs. Nationalism! One could argue that vehicle emissions could/should be responsibility of the Nation (as vehicle exhaust doesn't stop at state borders), but because public health and safety is traditionally an issue of State's rights, we have unique testing and inspection at the state level in the USA.

IIRK, there were even county-specific tests when I was growing up in the Midwest.

I’ll never understand this, and considering the possibility of moving back to Ca it’s toward the top of my “why am I even considering this?” list.

Can't you keep the cars registered in Maryland?
Sounds illegal but every rental car I've used at Orlando Int in Florida had a NJ or NY license Plate.
Has to be a $$ reason for that.
I'm sure the same is practiced elsewhere.

I probably could for 2 years, assuming I worked out the insurance. But then I’d need another emissions test in Maryland.

in California, that would also be very illegal. California encourages you to report out of state registration cars....
if you get pulled over with a California license with an out of state registration (in your name), you gotta go explain it to a judge.

its been nearly 20 years, but I believe that CA plates are also based on the sale price of the car instead of a flat fee in MD.

The end will be near when testing is wireless! Then the government can test you 24/7 via your RFID. Sadly...We will let it happen.

I paid a tax rate on purchase price in MD. I admit to paying a premium for a 6MT but unfortunately there isn't any base F430 market price data available to the MVA so they had to use purchase price. I say 'had to' use as they genuinely tried to help me but there was nothing they could do.

If it's been more than 2 years there won't be incremental Ca sales/use tax, just a collection of the 'smaller details' tax totaling $1252. If less than 2 years, here's how Ca will hit me: in addition to the ~$10k in MD tax, they will want to pull out another $5877 from my pocket. ouch. They are only giving me $4625 of my $10k paid tax in credit.

    Joe,
No expert here, but I believe if you can show that you purchased the car more than one year prior to it entering CA., no use tax is paid. I think it is one year...if that helps. I was privy to a recent transaction at DMV, and car was bought a little over a year prior, then entered CA, no use tax charged. No use tax paid in State it was bought in...maybe that changes things. I used the same online calculator, and got no use tax. Anyhow good luck if you decide to bring her to CA !

You might be right with one year and not 2.
