Importing a euro car

in working on importing a euro car from Hungary to the US (Ohio)
Are there any unforseen issues I should be or could be expecting?

I’m working with a shipping broker but just want to be prepared

What is the original market or type of the car ? There was not 3x8 sold new in Hungary, so could it be an US car ...

You will need a significant amount of PATIENCE! I imported my 308 out of Switzerland back in 2014 that took 3 months from the time that the transport company picked up the car until it was delivered. The majority of the delay will be getting the car through customs at both ends of the journey. Swiss customs took 3 weeks to release the car, it was on the water for a few weeks, several more weeks for US customs. It was a frustrating process and the import broker won't be able to provide an update concerning where the car is located. They are not set up the same as a FedEx or UPS where you have the ability to track at a moments notice. Lastly, the customs inspectors took the spare out of the boot and threw it on the front seat, pulled apart the spare wheel cover, I assume looking for the presence of something illegal. Not a pleasant experience. I would cover off these items with your broker to be assured that you will have an understanding of what is ahead.

 

I don't think it will be difficult to import a car more than 25 years old into the US. As I recall the DOT has a list of eligible cars and pertinent information on their website. The only issue you could run into is trying to import it into a state like California. You may want to consult your DMV to make sure its not an issue in your state. Not sure if a bond is still required.

I just did all this with my Vetroresina coming in from the UK two weeks ago. The shipping and customs were hassle-free. The car rolled out of the container two days after the container came off the boat. All I had to do was be there when the door opened and take my car...after paying the duty and port fees. Registered in AZ in less than 15 minutes with the two forms my customs guy gave me with my car keys.
