A friend bought a big MB AMG truck a few years ago. All the bangles. $140k. Trade today...$30k. we had a 2016 S550...$100k. In 24 months....$50k. Our Lambo Aventador Roadster cost the original buyer $450k. We paid $365 and sold it 2 years later for $325. No one gets out alive
Car was probably consigned... original owner made out. Dealer commission was probably equivalent to a brand new 488 sale. Economically, that's what it was to the dealer.
Owner probably did make out. Maybe made $4-500k. The dealer made probably 5-7% max. Car probably cost $1-1.3 to this owner. Car is now worth the same and will probably hold there and increase. All the money stuff aside...ITS A TDF. I would love one. Everyone would. Maybe one of the best Ferraris ever made. The feeling of owning and using a TDF has to be otherworldly. Seriously, its beyond epic. Its not just a lighter weight f12. What is the point of working and sacrificing if one cant occasionally enjoy the best of what life has to offer?
I know I’m coming across is the curmudgeon but I just have to ask : You purchased a TdF on the “ open market” ( I’m assuming that means NOT from a Ferrari Dealer ) So, Ferrari SpA did not make anything off you Ferrari NA did not make anything off you Ferrari Dealership did not make anything... As a matter of a fact you have turned your nose up to each one of them, going is far is to buy one at a premium outside of the network .... Yet you expect to be treated as a VIP simply because you now possesse a TdF ? Now , on the flip side of this point ... if you are saying you purchased the TdF from the Ferrari dealership in San Diego and your example happened, then I can understand 100% you’re frustration of not being offered some preferential treatment !!! Sounds like you have enough other super cars to enjoy , hopefully you have nice weather this weekend and you can find time to get out and drive at least one of them !!!
Super car owners have a very skewed view of the general public's perception of the importance of owning an expensive car, let along an exotic. Last year, 80 million vehicles were sold world wide. Ferrai sold about 8000. ( 0.0001%). Lamborghini sold 3,815 ( 0.000048 %). Latest estimates for 2017 is that there are 36 million millionares in the world. It is clear that those who are wealthy, and possess the means to purchase a super car, have no interest in doing so.
His car is basic spec and driven too many miles for the US market (know he is in UK). Over here it would definitely sell below the range you specified. Plenty of others at a more desirable spec with much less miles which is what buyers here desire. Maybe apples and oranges since he's in a different market but that's the way I see it.
A subtle almost intangible detail that can tip the scale in your favour when you might otherwise come up short...
Considering the average person has less than 2k in their bank account and prob owns a 20k car id say the answer to this is yes! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
With extravagant purchases I always convert them to a number of cars. "$10k for a tree? To normal people that's 1/2 a car!"
Just for today I’m going to enjoy my 488 spider and not worry about what I can or can’t have. Pista -Shmista. best , Kirk.
Old sales saying, make a customer happy, they tell 2 people. Make them unhappy, they tell 5. Great thing about the internet, you can tell thousands. And you should. Thanks for the post.
I totally agree. In fact I just finished my GT2RS build and am throughly enjoying my Cali. T. So Pista is out of sight and out of mind. At this time, my main consideration is whether to keep the California or trade up to a late cycle 488. I figure it is costing me around 20k a year for the California and the 488 (Spider), would run about 35k a year to own. The CaliT is fine since it’s all about top down cruising and driving a bit around town. The advantage of the 488 would be to have a new build and try to enhance relationship with the dealership to get on the 488 replacement car list. Thoughts?
Ask your dealer if they have any 488 Spiders inbound or on the ground that has never been registered. You want to be the first registered owner. I know our local dealer has a brand new gorgeous spec 488 Spider that the owner can't take delivery of....
If you have a gt2 rs coming- instead of 488 GTB, go for the spider. One hard top, one open air. 488 is just on a totally different level than Cali. Cali is nice and all but 488 vastly superior. If you want to “build that relationship” with Ferrari, spec or new. If you just want a car, shop around, some good deals out there. Congrats
