How powerful should the battery be in a 76 308?
Normally you should have about 65-70 amp but if you have extra gadget like power amp then you should have higher aperage.
I would use the highest amperage available, which size fits in the battery tray and is the correct build including a handle. My current battery I bought five years ago has a capacity of 74 Amp-hrs. My alternator output is 55 amps (Bosch replacement from year 2002) What's the amp output of your alternator? Don't know, whether it changed over the years on spare parts/replacement alternators. Shouldn't be too much higher than the alternator output. Otherwise the battery never gets fully charged. But around 70 Amp-hrs. should be o.k. Best from Germany Martin
Don't think that's quite correct. The alternator amperage is the amount of current that the alternator can output and usually relates to the maximum electrical load of the car (lights etc). The battery only requires an amp or two to charge but will take longer to charge up fully if it's being fed with a lower current. Usually the main use of the battery is to crank the car and get it started and light the lights when the car is parked etc.
