A quick thanks for one of the most comprehensive car forums out there...So after a few weeks of searching and reading threads, I just want to confirm with everyone the general advice in picking a 458 as a first Ferrari:

    1. "Buy the newest one with the most options that you want and can afford." Out of the bunch of 458s on the market, there seems to be a sweet spot of $190K in terms of model year, options and miles. Since those maintenance warranties are all running out soon anyway, doesn't seem better to go with lower price and higher mileage examples because service and maintenance will cost you on all cars anyway regardless of age and mileage?

    2. "Mileage is less important than service records. 458s are one of the most reliable Ferraris made." My main question is if 458s being engineered so well and having the benefit of being fairly mass produced, should I have to look at service records from Ferrari dealers as closely as 360 or F430? Can one be too picky about over 15K mileage cars with less service records if the sales price is substantially lower?

    3. "Buy your first Ferrari from a Ferrari dealer." Again, a preowned 458 is less than a new loaded 911 GT3 now. MB AMG GTRs are almost $200K. I get Ferraris are Italian and more "temperamental" due to the specificity of manufacturing, but they made a ton of these cars and there are ton of these on the road--in comparison to the exotic car market--so should I really be that afraid of buying from a non Ferrari dealer or a private party not on FerrariChat?

My main dilemma is deciding generally between 2010 cars with 15K+ miles, no maintenance, private or off brand dealer, ok service records but with the lowest market prices of $150-160K or 2012-2013 cars with less than 10K miles, from Ferrari dealers, one or two years of maintenance left, for $180K-200K.

The car enthusiast part of me that has bought everything besides Ferrari says always buy the cheapest car because any money to be saved can only be done at that point of purchase and that generally--not talking about extreme examples of looking for the cheapest car--the chances of repair do not out weigh the certainty of the initial savings. And especially with everyone touting the reliability of the modern 458, I feel more inclined to talk a risk with a higher mileage and less "perfect" car.

Thanks again for those who can help and made it through my rambling questions.

buying a ferrari is always a crap shoot. follow the basic laws of being a reasonable person.

check out my FF and 430 threads where i go through service histories since new to get idea of what these things entail.

i had 2 2010 458s and no issues. most 458s will have good service records as most have probably been serviced at a dealer. id go for the 2010 and the money you save can be your insurance policy.

no need to buy from a dealer. you can buy from an owner. id try and find a 458 from a board member.

buy options you care about, dont buy options for the sake of buying options. you rarely maximize your exit price this way and if you are trying to figure this out to the nearest $5k you playing in the wrong sand box. you can absolutely buy a low option 2010 from an owner and enjoy it for 2, 5, 10 years etc

keep in mind half the advice on this board comes from people who have never bought a ferrari or maybe have bought 1 or 2 and think they've figured out where the ark of the covenant resides. there is no magic formula other than dont be stupid and buy what you like, dont buy what you think others will like.

It also depends how much you intend to use your car - if the plan is to keep it a few years and add significant mileage, saving 20K to 30K today makes perfect sense, because in the end the residual value will be very similar.
But you already ruled out the most expensive 2014-2015, and I also think you should also look for a very fine example to not have regrets. You could look at a 2010-2011 car with a comprehensive services record, and consider a Ferrari warranty for final peace of mind.
    Good hunt :)

Went through the same questions until a couple months ago when I finally bought my first Ferrari...2011 458 15k with the right colour combo and most options I wanted. Good luck!

Seems like you actually have already pretty much know what you want and you have good reasons to believe them... I would just add on that: "the cheapest ferrari is very often the most expensive one"

    Good luck in searching!
