that piece of sheepskin stops the rear wing melting on first startup, when raw methanol comes out the exhaust and creates an invisible flame. It settles down in about 30 seconds, but is deadly to the carbon wing end plate while it's there. Was having a great race this afternoon, dicing with a well driven F5000_with_bodywork thing when on lap 5 I lost 4th gear. Did the last 3 laps going 3rd to 5th but lost too much pace and only just hung onto 4th place. Back in the garage the gearbox was making very unhappy noises, so 4th is definitely stripped, retired the car and packed up
btw big shout out to DMWC, who is my crew chief and does an amazing job. He used to fettle Anzac frigates, so an Indy car is easy peasy
Bummer. That box hasn't given you a lot of joy. Did you rebuild it after you found the agricultural fix to the LSD?
Yes, the Hewland DGB is rated for 400hp and the car is nearly double that. Classic case of Adrian Newey who uses the smallest sized components and packaging for aero benefit. My Lola had a VG gearbox, where the V stands for Very large. It was a brute, but it never broke. In hindsight, I was struggling to get into 4th during qualifying, due to a loose helicopter joint. I probably did the damage then. I still loved every moment of the race, you may not get a lot of seat time in these cars, but it's so exhilarating that you forgive all the work and inconvenience .
I guess you can count you blessings the teeth didn’t take out the whole cluster [emoji106] Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Emco gears in the US. They're better quality than Hewland. I should have put a new 4th in when I did 3rd and 5th. False economy again!
It's all designed to prevent that happening Adrian, that's why I continued to the end of the race. Makes a lot of noise as the teeth get flung around like a washing machine, but does no harm.
