How long to change a CV Boot?

Thanks. You just saved me time and aggravation. I bought the type pictured from a local NAPA store. I’ve got the type you mentioned on order from Ferrari Parts Exchange. On order almost 2 weeks and still not shipped [emoji848]

But the Ferrari ones I got (from eurospares) were of an even different types, like the one you pictured but the band was much shorter so it was unable to use the tool I show you:

I just cancelled my order with Ferrari Parts Exchange (Ferrparts) They won’t respond to my email inquires. I’ll just start over. See if Autozone or Advance Auto has them. Much cheaper too. I noticed only a couple bucks each on their websites.

Just use the regular ones and proper pliers. They work good and easy to put on

 

I'm not a fan of using silicon sealer but the boot I replaced a couple of years ago was leaking grease from the big end. I thought the clamp was loose so I replaced the clamp. Still leaked. The problem is some of the new boots don't have the same lip on the big end as the original and seem to leak. I'll be replacing that boot come spring with one sealed with silicon. Probably could even get away w/o the clamp!

I have a feeling you don't have the proper boot

 

Both the boot I am replacing and the boot I am replacing it with are the same. Both form reputable but different Ferrari parts suppliers. They are the correct size but different than the OEM boot I took off. Anyway, this one won't leak!

 

I’m waiting on the CV Boot straps I ordered to come in but noticed the Boots I bought from Ferrparts have a lip that doesn’t allow them to butt up against the flange. They do fit over the lip. hopefully they won’t come off [emoji51]

Also, I thought about trimming that inner piece of rubber off that is preventing the boot from sliding all the way onto the flange.

The boot looks like mine but the 348 flange is different that the 355 flange. The "neck" the 355 flange is shorter so the boot goes all the way on. But the neck of the flange also has a concave shape that a lip (or ridge) in the OE boot fits into. The new boots don't have that lip.

 

Here is a picture of the OE boot from a 355 that shows what I'm referring to. See picture to the right which show the lip and contour of the 355 flange/boot.

is that the same tool used for engine hose clamps too ? need to get one for those ! it's my practice to put heat-proof / fire proof hose covers on applicable hoses ! looks trick, cool and is highly functional. gets bloody hot in the AZ sonoran desert . hoses last longer too !

 

Not sure its just a standard tool for these type of clamps.

Well here is what I know. My car is June 95 build. What I posted in #64 is what was on my car, gear box end, when I bought it. However, it had been replaced by Ferrari before I bought the car. The kit I bought a couple of years ago had the same flange but the boot did not have the lip. This time I just bought the boot and it had no lip, thus my application of silicon. It appears a lot of Ferraris from the 348, F355 (2.7 & 5.2), 360, 430,.... all used the same inner boot (70000867) which has been superseded a couple of time to 70006021 which is now used on both inner and outer ends. I presume I have the 6021 flange/boot.

Early 355 and 348, and some other cars originally had a different outer (wheel side) part than the later 355s, so which end are we talking about?

But in any event, it looks like Vince does not have the flange that comes with the present 6021 boot kit.

The transaxle side is different on the early 355s. I went through this with Dave- he will know what one to get. My sn is 00453 if that helps. I think the early ones are from a TR? My build date is December of 94 iirc.

 

The original inner flange on the 348 and various 355s may well be different. That may be why the 6021 boot kit comes with a new inner side flange, thus allowing use of the same boot.

This is the picture of my 90’ 348 inner flange. I’m wondering should I just buy new flanges with the boots or take a chance that the boots will not come off.
You can see the lip doesn’t allow for the boot to go all the way snug to the flange [emoji848]

Those look like the ones I had. Those CV boots aren't right for the flange. They will pop off. I would contact Dave Rocks as he can point you in the right direction.... I had this exact same problem except those boots didn't fit my outside flanges (the ones at the wheel). Those look exactly like the same flange.

Also, for those retaining straps that go around the boot, a Ferrari mechanic suggested using vise grips and holding the lock down on the front with the blade of a screwdriver and pulling. I found I got a better deal by taking the vice grips/pliers and rocking it against the top of the lock and using it as leverage to cinch it down tight.

 

Take the flange to an auto parts store along with a measurement of the axle diameter and see it that can fix you up. Maybe the old boot too if you can clean it up.
