As posted before I needed to replace the steering rack on my 1991 348TS I bought a new one from eurospares F156683 Upon arrival I saw it was a TRW part no 37502289 The old one was also TRW but 37502244 Here a few photos of the install that took me around 4 hours with some help of my friend I is a very tight fit Second photo is of the RHside Third of the LHside Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi is your car right or left hand drive? I removed my rack from my right hand drive car today and had to take the rack gear out to get it out, couldn’t find a way of removing it, took me all day! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The non drivers side is the problem The ball joint is OK but the part that it is attached too is loose from the cilinder What exactly is the problem is not clear to me at the moment I suppoose that it is repairable so I will keep it as a spare part Image Unavailable, Please Login
So the inner tie rod (the ball / socket par) is OK, but the shaft where it is attached to is loose? If that is the case, the rack is toast and it is throw-away.
Ferrari Parts list shows 4 LHD racks: 139763 155566 156683 139763 However, TRW PN 37502244 appears to be from the earlier cars while TRW PN 37502289 is for the later. https://www.ebay.com/itm/90-Ferrari-348-TS-steering-rack-box-155566/391892680214 https://www.ebay.com/itm/94-Ferrari-348-TS-power-steering-rack-155566/272750543361 Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Is there a difference in rack gear lateral movement per pinion rotation between the two part numbers? Either on center or near the outer limits?
I switched from the 'earlier' to the 'later' version No difference in steering feel So I suppose they are similar at least May disassemble the old one later this week
There are some extra mounting components on the later looking at this drawing. Looks like a support plate. Parts 9 to 12 are different. As for the rack itself who knows without testing the ratio etc. Cant find anything on that yet. https://www.eurospares.co.uk/parts/ferrari/348-27-motronic/suspension-steering/steering-box-and-linkage-41192
Good point, plus the mount points are beefier on the later version. Photos not to scale. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Don’t know why my car proved impossible to remove the rack, I couldn’t get the splined piece out of the bulkhead, I had to undo the bolts holding the splined gear in and push it out. I have removed all my front suspension now so will refurb this and hopefully with more clearance reinstallation will be possible in one piece. Does the sway bar come out?! It also looks like it could be a challenge ! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The rack is a challenging job because of clearance issues but it can be done. I get what you say though. The sway bar is a pig too. Scroll down this page about half way for my efforts. May be of some help to you. http://www.clubscuderia.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?52489-Ferrari-348-engine-bay-and-rear-end-restoration/page13
Is that you Nick? You sold me this 348!! Been sorting out the rust and rebuilding the suspension, enjoying the car Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yes Wade. I thought the mounts looked different. My betting is the ratios are the same but the difference could fitting. Perhaps some one here has the answer.
Brian, Get the a/c tube out of the way Loosen the sway bar and remove the support plate both sides, no need to remove it This way you can push the bar aside Look at the photo's in my post You need room to manouevre around
Sure. Im just wondering what those extra parts on the diagram are for exactly. Its described as a spacer on Eurospares. Whats the purpose exactly? I can only imagine its for levelling the rack to the body.
Finally got my refurbed rack back into the car, however there is play (slight steering wheel turn required for rack to respond) is this normal? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Was looking for steering rack numbers and found this, perfect, I noticed open question so I'll address it for others. fdekeu, the issue is the inner bushing has disintegrated and is missing. This causes the rack attached to the inner tie rod to slop around in the mounting tube causing really poor steering and feel, it is more noticeable on the highway at speeds it can be unnerving actually, like not turning as you slowly turn the wheel then it finally reacts but overly so. The extra parts are a spacer and stud etc... for 1994 cars for certain chassis numbers. Not sure if that means this rack requires the spacer plate for older chassis too as well to line up correctly. The mounts look thinner but not sure if it is related the the steering rack or the body where it mounts. I think it is body related as it is needed for 355 racks and they likely changed the body a tad to fit stuff before the 355 was out.. JUST GUESSING... As a visual, the bushing (made one in Delrin in black below) goes where the pointer is pointing. The OEM one tends to disintegrate.
