P Zeroes, what gives?

I have Corsas on the CS and the 570. I like them, but I do find they get a bit slick towards the end of a track day. Even though the tires are both Corsas, they have completely different tread patterns. I may go to Trofeo R next. Some of my Mac track friends like Nitto R888R. Notice I said Mac track friends. Where I am Ferrari’s seem to be used exclusively for getting good valet spots.

I like both Michelin and Pirelli. Just put Pzeros on the Mercedes, quiet ride loads of grip and very smooth. Personally I've never had a problem with pirelli tires other then short life, they have consistent grip thru their life, Michelins so far have not, and to my ears Michelins get a bit noisy over time. Both are to me great tires, there's also a bunch of flavors for the Pzero I think that makes it difficult to compare across the board.

 

Forgot to add, just put Pzeros on the McLaren, had Michelins, huge improvement. But to be fair the pirellis were special ordered for the McLaren. They do require heating up, but stick like glue once warm. Figure we might get 7k miles on them.

 

Do they do a Ferrari version with some symbol on the sidewall ?

I know they do a “ b” version for Bentley GT Continentals .
P Zero rosso .
Combination of tuned sidewall stiffness or suppleness for the Bentley ride and as said above by the Macca owner unique compound tuned for that modal for grip.
I know Porsche tyres used to have a “n “ symbol for a few brands they recommend.

Otherwise we are comparing apples and pears saying a generic PZero rosso without knowing if it’s the right version for the car is worse or better than [ insert your brand ] .

Because I reckon they have different sidewall stiffness and stickiness of the compound .
I would not want the Macca spec on my Bentley or I,am sure the Macca owner would not want the “b” spec on his Mclaren.
There is a normal cooking version with no tuning symbol again would not want those on by B .

So do Pirelli do a “f” version(s) after collaboration with Ferrari ?

 

Yes, there is a F spec available in the P Zero. The Michelins denote Ferrari specific as K spec (I don’t know why).

 

I have never liked Pirellis on any of my cars. They are a good tyre when fully warmed up but in colder ambient temperatures the grip drops away alarmingly. Michelins are a better tyre as they maintain grip over a much wider ambient temperature range, are quieter, more comfortable and give longer life. What’s not to like. The single advantage I would give to the Pirellis is that they have a crisper initial turn in but that is no real compensation for a lack of overall grip.

However, if you drive in a climate that rarely drops below 10C (50F) then you’ll no doubt find the performance of Pirellis quite acceptable.

 

I currently have P Zeros on my Fiat 500 Abarth. About to remove the next week and put on brand new Kumho Ecstas. I'm hoping for a quieter tire with a bit more grip and a little longer life. I'll report back here with my impressions.

On a hot day on track the Pirelli on my 599 got litterally ripped to shreds, one thing that never happened to any Michelin tyres I got - Michelin could wear a lot but in a regular way.

 

Bingo!

 

I once slid an M-5 (On P Zeros) SIDEWAYS down the crown of a driveway while moving it on a cold day. Sideways.

 

The P-Zeros I put on my 456M were the best tires I've ever driven on. Super smooth and super quiet. Great traction.

The 456M's stock wheels are the same size as some year Corvette or other, so those were the ones I got. There were no sidewall or compound options in that size at all that I found.

I did a track day at COTA with them, and the next week I drove from San Antonio to the south entrance of the BRP and did the whole enchilada, and then returned home.

They had about half their tread left, so they lasted about 4K miles to that point, and could have gone 6K, which is not bad for a high performance tire, especially the way I drove on them.

I decided on Michelin PSS for my 360 because there were no P-Zeros available at the time. I would have had to special order them, and I didn't want to wait.

 

I see a lot of people abusing their tires from the onset and not properly breaking them in. Then complaining about their poor grip and excessively short life.
That is not to say all that exhibit a short life have been abused....not at all my point. Carefully and more gently heat cycle new tires for a few hundred miles before tearing up the asphalt and you will have far better results.

 

What’s the BRP? Brazos River something-or-other?

I used to live in Maryland, so I've spent a LOT of time on the Parkway, but always on BMW bikes. Just had to do it in a Ferrari. The weather was perfect and it was an awesome day of driving.

 

We need to get together sometime. You and I have lots in common; ferraris, bikes, music..!
