Many moons ago at Kai Tak, we were stopped trying to carry a framed picture on board - too long they said so we whipped out the Swiss army knife (ah the good old days) and took the frame apart, intending to roll the painting along the short dimension. Anyway, as we got it all apart the attendant grabbed the loose (metal) frame sections, stuck them diagonally in the measuring box so that they now fitted, and handed the whole lot back to us to carry on board!
Hey! Kai Tak was still in operation in 1998, that's only 20 years ago... Chek Lap Kok just makes me cry thinking of how convenient KT was. 40 minutes to get to the most distant gate, sheesh! We lived at the Wanchai end of Kennedy Road and my then husband was working Mon-Fri in Taipei - I could sit on the patio and watch his plane land, run downstairs and jump in the X1/9 and pull up outside the airport door as he walked through!
