Depends how old. One of the primary reasons for failure of Koni shocks is that the oil from very long periods of inactivity separates and part of it turns into a waxy like material and plugs or partially plugs the valves in the bottom of the shock. Just because they were not mounted in a car time did not stop.

    Interesting.

If my car sits for a long time (3 weeks plus), I have rear suspension clatter which clears after about ten miles. My suspension has never been rebuilt (... its on the list). Because the clatter clears, I have assumed its in the shocks. Is this a common symptom/problem of old shocks?

It has a name, Koni knock. Usually does not go away. Must be in beginning stages if in fact in is the shocks.
