looking at buying a 456 as my first Ferrari - gated or not, and what is the premium for a gated car? Thoughts on the 456?

Paul, OP is not a new member. He has been here longer than you. His posting rate of less than 1 per year is the reason why you think he's a newbie.
just be sure to bump this thread in twelve months so OP can see your reply :D

And, if you look at his posts, most of his posts are duplicated, so for every actual comment, he seems to post it twice, so he only really posts an average of bi-annually.....

Perhaps short term memory lost ala Memento? Every year he remembered that he wanted to buy a 456?

I'm not sure what the issue is - I don't post often and have looking to buy a Ferrari for a few years - collect mostly Hot Rods and other Marques. I'm currently looking at a 456, but am not that familiar with the model. I will, of course, drive it and get a PPI, but thought I'd get some thoughts on the 456 vs other models for a first time buyer. The car fits me well and since I'm a short type guy, that is important.

They’re wonderful GTs, understated, and fully depreciated.
They’re getting old and expensive to fix.
But once sorted, they should be fairly reliable.

Strongly suggest you read the Buyer’s Guide, it should fully answer your questions.

    Hi Larry,

I was lead to believe you have a 1 post per year cadence.

You replied, so no issue with me!

As far as the 456, I think it's gorgeous and a fantastic car. The 6 speed is a premium though, and I hear a bit more fun, but I have not driven either, so you'll get better advice in the 456 forum.

    Best wishes to you.

    Thanks Paul,
I've toyed with the idea of adding a Ferrari and was looking at a 430 a few years ago - ended up buying a Porsche Panamera Turbo. But, the bug is back, and I know of a gated 456 with service records and history. In addition, I'm Chairman of the Concours d'Elegance of America in Michigan and this year we are featuring Ferrari - race cars and early production cars, so the Ferrari bug has once again hit. Hence, the reappearance on this forum and the question.

You've been a member of FerrariChat for over 10 years now, so surely you should know that if you want information about a specific Ferrari model, you are far better off posting a thread in that models section of the site, than in the: "Ferrari Discussion (Not model specific)" section?

A quick review of the "456/550/575" section, indicates that you haven't bothered posting anything at all there - Which seems a tad strange!

My first Ferrari was a 456M. Wonderful car and a perfect first Ferrari. The M's are mostly automatics, so a manual is a lot more. Like $50K for a good automatic and $125K for a manual.

The older 456's are all manuals before a certain point, so not too much of a premium for them right now.

As mentioned, they are old cars now and so they're expensive to repair if something breaks. I spent a LOT to make mine perfect, but then it was perfectly reliable.

    Hi Larry,

No worries friend, we get a larger then average ''ghost" posts here and a fair share of virtual tire kickers, that's where the skepticism comes from.

That said, I agree with the above posts, as the moderator to move to the 456 forum, and those guys I'm sure will be happy to help!

    Best wishes
