Yes, but I thought we were not talking about very talented drivers who by their own merit are able to raise some cash. Stroll, Ericsson, De Cesaris, etc., they all had put "family money" to buy a seat.

My point is that even super talented drivers who became WDCs bought their way into F1. It is not unusual to do so. The real test is whether you eventually become a paid driver vs a pay driver.

...heck, I bought my way into three different F1 cockpits. But they never called back... :p

Still a long way to go for Mick, but he’s a thoughtful and intense character like his dad, and I’ve no doubt he will reach formula one at some point in the near future.... Michael would be proud as punch today

Alesi, Fittipaldi and Schumacher in the same photo. The familiar names continue showing up, but can any match their father's legacy?

1 - Giuliano Alesi is average at best, he is in the FDA just because of his father.
2 - Marcus Amstrong and Callum Illot were really talented drivers in go-karts. Callum hasn't been lucky in single seaters though.
3 - Enzo Fittipaldi had had a very mediocre career in karting, I wasn't rating him very highly but he took the F-4 by storm showing some impressive skills and aggressiveness in a precise way. He is short and that helps for a single seater driver. Looking forward to see the Fittipaldi name in F1 againagain.
4 - Gianluca Petecof I don't know much about him, just that he came to Europe by the hands of Shell Brazil.
5 - Robert Shwartzman is average.
6 - I really hope that Mick shines in F2. Last year's F3 championship was really strange, Dan Ticktum with the "humble" Motopark was clearly superior to all others during most of the championship, Mick Schumacher hadn't had a single win until 3 races to the finish, and then all of a sudden all Prema cars started to perform above all as if they had got a more powerful engine. Since even Lance Stroll had won the F3 with Prema, Mick needs to show whether he really has got some "Schumacher's talent.
7 - Fuoco is done. Probably will be moved to GT racing or something.

Enzo is grandson of Emerson, not son.

Coincidentally today I was chatting with a friend who have raced in F-Renault, F-3. and Euroformula and who was also team mate with Lance Stroll and Dan Ticktum during karting. He has good connections within the euro racing community and said that the gossip was that at some point of the F3 season the high management level of Daimler requested HWA AG, a spin-off of the original AMG and the builder of the the Mercedes F3 engines, to do "whatever it takes" to provide the best engine for Mick Schumacher.

But Mick still had to drive it and race the rest to the wins. Presumably prior to that, some other team had the ‘best’ performing engine?

Mick seemed to do very well in the multiple disciplines at the ROC, and hasn’t yet made any statements claiming he is the second coming of Michael, or anywhere near his dad. He has applied himself to learning racecraft and actually shunned the media, even using false names at times to do so in order he is NOT compared to his father. This year, he simply reached a point where he has to accept and expect media coverage and the usual ******** that comes with it, but he continues to make certain his driving speaks for itself. That, ironically, makes him more like his dad than anything else.

With the attitude he has, the clear talent he holds, and careful management and shielding, he will soon show us if he fully matured to become a great driver like his father, or just another driver like so many others that reach F1 but don’t make the final step.

Great stuff Sid. I truly hope the kid doesn't just make it into F1, but enters with undisputable merit.

Let's recall some key facts here regarding Michael so we understand Michael was not Mr. Perfection prior to F1. Mercedes C11/C291 program pulled the top 3 F3 drivers which included runner up, Michael, and Karl Wendlinger (championship winner), and the other runner up Heinz Frenzen. Michael was super fast in the C11/C291 paired usually with Jochen Mass and Wendlinger, but was out-scored by far the far older Mass. The circumstances are debatable but Michael was seen as 'the future' due to him being young, competitive, and marketable to the ripe German market, even if at the time he wasn't the outright fastest (although he did set more fastest laps than anyone in C11/C291). That said, this was Michael first experience in such capable machinery while Mass was an old pro by time, implying Michael had room to grow, which he obviously did.

So if we see Mick as top 3 in F2, setting fastest laps, making fearless moves as he did in F3, we will know he is just as ready as his Dad was.

The thing MS learned in the Sauber was driving around problems and preserving a car to the finish line. A craft which came in handy in F1. Especially when stuck in 5th gear.

He had never set the world ablaze in any of the lower open seater formulas. Until he sat in a F1. Things change at that level and that's why success and failures at lower levels can predict the future only so far.

Encouraging start from young Mick! Nyck de vries topped testing but he already has 2 full F2 seasons behind his back (with wins in both years), F3.5 (similar speed) and champion in several series before it. Vastly more experienced.

Latifi he matched, who is now a entering his 6th year of F2/GP2.
