Rolex 24, Hour 16: Alonso leads after sensational wet stints https://www.motorsport.com/imsa/news/sensational-alonso-leads-wet-daytona/4329416/
Just woke up. Race under caution due to the rain it looks like? Sucks that Alonso lost so much of a lead. What a drive he's had.
Race is going back to green despite drivers saying it's pretty dangerous conditions currently. Edit: They went from going green on the current lap to red flagging the race!? I don't understand the decision making here. They are going to park the cars in order on pit row and have them sit in the rain instead of running. This makes zero sense.
The teams discussed among themselves about how it is redundant to be running around on the track under yellow. RLM just did an interview with Wayne Taylor who convened with Team Penske and they convinced IMSA to halt the race. Lets hope no water gets into the fuel supply a-la 1976! BHW
With 7:13 remaining the race has been Red Flagged. The last time the Rolex24 was red-flagged for rain was 2004 and that was a two hour, 52 minute delay. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I just checked the weather radar and there is no hope for the rain to stop before nightfall. There is a wide swath of rain, some of it quite heavy, "training" across the peninsula, and the rain chance is near 100% all day long. I think the best choices the organizers have is to either: call the race concluded as of right now with the current class leaders the winners, or postponing the resumption of the race until the same time tomorrow morning. Which do you guys prefer?
Let the 2019 race break the 2004 record of 2hrs and 52min....if the deluge persists.....conclude the race as is because IF tomorrow, ALOT of logistics have to be rescheduled on the fly IMO. I posted a forecast on page 6 for the rest of the day.
agreed. I don't understand why driving in the rain is "such an issue" that the race has to be stopped. I think the best drivers come out in inclement weather such as this while others bin it or shunt it....oh well...that's racing. Plus if they keep driving, they displace water IF if it stops raining and keeps the cars "primed."
Radar doesn't look good... I think they'll get back to racing again but it may be a while. BHW Image Unavailable, Please Login
Don’t understand your frustration. You just said the drivers were saying the conditions were dangerous to be going to back to green on. Seems clear it’s stopped in the name of driver safety.
Alex Zanardi saying stopping was the right call. He said it was hard to stay on the line behind the safety car and that it was hard to control the car in a couple corners bc they were so slick. He couldn’t imagine what it would be like if they went back to green, so he’s in agreement with the call and hopes to get back out later on.
Can't believe it's still red flagged. I understand it's more dangerous but that's racing. If you don't feel safe then you don't go out... Don't hold the rest back...
I don't understand how you go from going to green to calling a red flag. These are two very different situations. I also don't understand parking the cars where they did as it presented the possibility of further issues with no team support nearby. Race control decision making in the moment is what I didn't understand.
