True, I wouldn’t mind that either. But it all boils down to the type of owner the person is. Some, as mentioned, like to have their cars roped off while they sip cocktails in the VIP lounge somewhere. But it would be a sight to see.

Back home and ready to be detailed. For anyone who shows their cars at great concours like Cavallino, they know the time and effort that goes into the process (especially if you need to transport long distances). But, it’s all worth it if you have a great showing.

I agree with you, at 55 years old I feel like one of the younger people there, (both at the event and in elderly focused West Palm Beach itself).
Whilst I don't think we need to "throw the baby out with the bath water" efforts need to be made to encourage young people into the event.
    Otherwise it dies.
I'm told that FNA were looking at becoming more involved and moving it to Miami.
Hate to say it, as I like Cavallino's independence and judging rigor, the top lawn is phenomenal, but a change of venue might not be a bad thing.
Miami is a forward looking city, appealing to younger people, partners of car people (Design District) and a big Ferrari market. There is plenty to do if it rains (unlike at the Breakers/WPB) and plenty of places to eat.
FNA could bring modern LE's, Classiche, F1, all things to appeal to younger people, people we need to acquire an interest in the older cars now. On the other hand I concede how heavy handed and domineering Ferrari can be perceived as. A balance needs to be sought.
Anyway they are just my thoughts, Its not that there is anything wrong with Cavallino, and much to like/admire. I have great respect for the organizers and entrants. I just want to see it healthy in 10 years time.

I wouldn’t change the venue. the Breakers and Cavallino belong together much like the 18th fairway at Pebble Beach hoes with that concours. It’s elegant and totally fits the image. I think the demographics of Palm Beach has little to do with it. It’s all about the participants and what’s on the show field. I love the vintage cars and in no way would I want less emphasis on them. If anything, I’d like to see more of them. Having said that, the hyper end of modern cars needs to grow significantly, as well as ways to greatly expand the lower field with top end modern cars. Keep in mind the vast majority of participants bring their cars from all over the country. Most of the attendees I meet come from well beyond Florida. Between Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando alone there are literally dozens of LaFerrari’s, Enzo’s, etc., not to mention Speciale’s, Pistas. And that’s just Florida. I’m sure many of the top collectors would be open to bringing their cars if asked. Many of the top collectors who own the cars on the croquet lawn also have the best modern cars as well. Most of them currently participate or have in the past. This isn’t about making a choice of what should be at the show. There’s plenty of room for all cars and all types of enthusiasts. Cavallino is the greatest Ferrari show in the world. It has the pull and reputation to grow. It just needs some adjustment to its marketing to bring in a greater portfolio of the best Ferrari’s from all generations as well as efforts to draw in those who prefer more modern cars.

Moving Cavallino to Miami would be the death knell for the event. They have enough events of their own. Completely different culture and group of people that IMO would be a terrible fit. Frankly the last thing Cavallino needs is ANY Miami influence. Every time I hear this discussed or suggested my skin crawls! :)

Something we were discussing this past weekend regarding this very topic. How many modern owners are leasing? Ferrari's demographic has changed drastically and I personally think the new wave of owners are often leasees. That would explain the lack of interest on their end. If you have less invested in the brand and ownership it makes sense that you wouldn't care about showing or being judged. Can't imagine a casual owner would invest the time and effort required prep, ship and display their car across state lines.

Cavallino does indeed market to all makes of Ferraris. In the past the field was absolutely packed with modern cars in addition to vintage. In fact, the field regularly sold out and many were turned away early simply because there wasn't enough space. When I worked at Shelton I can remember several instances where new owners took delivery of their car and took it to the track the very next day. Hell, the Breakers parking lot was an epic show in of itself.

Where did they all go? Something has changed. As I've said before it's the owners. I see plenty of cars out and about in south Florida. On any given weekend you can see multiple LaFerraris, Speciale's TDF's etc. driving around town. They are around but not interested. How you target this new group is beyond me.

I can't say why things may have changed from years ago, but I can say there is an opportunity to grow the number of significant modern cars at the show. When I say significant, I'm mostly referring to the cars you mention above - the very top end models. This past weekend I spoke with three major collectors who have LaFerrari's, Enzo, LaFerrari Apertas, Speciale's, etc. All were very open to bringing those cars and these are not leasers or less desirable types. They are well respected, classy enthusiats. Frankly, there should be a dozen LaFerrari's at Cavallino (and Enzos, F50's, F40's, etc.). They may not appeal to those who just love the vintage class, but they belong there. I'm not criticizing the organizers of the show, I just think it takes a bit more one on one outreach to encourage them to bring these cars. It's the same thing they are currently doing to get a strong vintage class to show up. We all want Cavallino to grow and be strong for many years to come.

Simply put, they have left because of the reputation of the organizer of Cavallino. One prominent south Florida car guy (used to be active on here) was turned away from an event maybe 10 years ago by Mr. Barnes because he was driving something Mr. Barnes did not like. He was not trying to put his car on the field or anything like that, but rather pulling into a corral area at the track IIRC. Anyway, between the unwelcoming attitude and the ever increasing prices to try and squeeze as much as possible out of the brand, people got turned off. Lots of local new car guys feel they bring something to the show by simply participating with their cars and that is true!). John Temerian had a much more successful competing event with his 'Supercar weekend' that was more of a weekend long party compared to what is perceived as a stuffy event at the Breakers. No cost to enter your car, and spectators paid $50. It was jam packed with tons of kids, teens, young professionals, etc... Maybe 20,000 people. Bands playing, drinks flowing, it was a good time!

I realize the Breakers would seem "stuffy" but I have to tell you, it was my first time and everyone was awesome. I'm a shoulder length hair, jean and T-shirt guy. No attitude from anyone - the event was awesome - even in the rain :)

You’re swimming upstream. Cavallino is what it is due to John and Cynthia Barnes. While I have not heard them say this, I would not be surprised to hear they don’t care for the newer cars. Moreover, I suspect the majority of people who show and attend don’t care that much about the newer cars. Frankly, after their fights with Ferrari and people like Glickenhaus, they have earned the right to do whatever the hell they want to do. They really are one of the last of the dinosaurs. They cared about these old cars back when nobody, including the factory, gave a damn. More power to them.

This is just an educated guess, but I’m going to guess the Barnes would be appalled at having 20,000 drunks show up at their party.
