Maybe it also has to do with the speed range. I do know that in World War II, when the Allied planes were able to strip the matte Olive Drab finish from their aircraft in the latter stages of the air war, the aircraft gained a few MPH in speed. And if they actually polished the resultant natural-metal finish (especially on the laminar-flow wings of the P-51s), they gained a few more MPH. But maybe that is more important at 300-400 MPH than it is at 150-200 MPH.
Has that anything to do with the boundary layer? In some cases, retaining a constant layer of air mollecules on a surface at speed is more beneficial than having a polished surface. It's a bit of a black art, but aerodynamicists are now familiar with it.
Yep, it's that millimeter or 2 of thickness and above that is the free stream of air flowing over the body.
Matte finishes tend to be rougher than glossy finishes, which is probably where the added drag would come from. When building plastic models, it is recommended to overspray a matte finish with Glosscote before applying decals, then to refinish with Dullcote afterwards to restore the matte finish.

Correct, the one at the LIVE launch was a 2018 car. The studio pics are a more "realistic" image of the car.
The new Renault looks like last year's Red Bull. Haas is my dark horse this season. Rich Energy dumped a pallet stacked with cash on the tarmac for them.... and I do truly believe pound for pound they are the most effective team. It is nothing short of amazing what Haas has done with their resources. Their goal is to take it to Red Bull proper, and boy I hope they do. Christian Horner really doesn't seem to like Americans meddling with F1 by the way he is constantly dumping on Liberty's handling. Would love to see his lunch handed to him by Haas.
I like Haas, and the way they do things. They don't try to do everything in-house, but outsource as much as they can, which seems sensible to me with a limited budget. Williams should take a leaf of their book.
True, but difficult to attract talented drivers when you are a mid-field team. They could take a gamble on a top F2 driver, but they have stuck with experienced hands. Grosjean is the weakest link though, and Magnussen not favorite among his peers.
Exactly! Don't try and reinvent a good system, just use it, and improve in areas where there is room to make measurable improvement. Haas' rear suspension arrangement is just awesome, specifically the rear upper A-arm arrangement which is offset similar to how others offset the front upper A-arm.
