Well, here's something to frustrate you, anger you, and just tear the crutch out your nightie.
After the war had ended, there were hundreds of Spitfires, P40's, mustangs here in Australia, they were "Surplus to Requirement" and had to be SOC. "Struck Off Charge"
This meant destroyed. Perfectly airworthy aeroplanes and Zero hour engines still in their crates, both Merlins and Allison's.
SO... this horrible sight is how these beautiful things were treated.
Crews with sledge hammers smashed brand new engines, aircraft burnt and broken in half.

The Warbirds were typically too hard on fuel consumption and utility to use for commercial use. Plus technology had advanced so much from the war. The gas turbine was taking over! The Allison/ Merlin debate: I believe RR had more experience with multi stage and multi speed supercharging! Packard built the Merlin under license in Detroit, and had a better fit tolerance than the hand fitted RR Merlin.

And if they didn't scrap all those planes they wouldn't be worth so much today! Trying to look on the bright side here......

Same as the sharknose GP cars. Scrap!

for me it is not so much a question of value today - more of destroying so much value at that time

The war in the Pacific was expected to last to 1947!
Think of all the lives spared, compared to excess material!

Yes I like them and I recently found out SKF only offers plastic pulleys now for their tensioner bearings. When I worked at Ford everything had plastic tensioner bearings and idler bearings and they would develop cracks over time. Not an epidemic or anything but just an observation. I dont get a warm fuzzy feeling using plastic tensioners on one of these cars for several reasons.

    Thanks,
Ferrari suppliers now furnish plastic pulleys - - Wow, never saw that coming! I agree. Not my first choice. Must be some of the not-so-old old stock metal ones I'd hope. The Hill ones are beautiful.

Today I set the cam timing using the centerline method because on OEM cams Ferrari is out to lunch with how they explain the "timing clearance" being .020". The aftermarket cams I use have you set to zero lash then check seat timing at .050" lift. So cams are degreed in, lash verified then off came the heads to do a valve to piston clearance check. Before and after is the same with no valve contact at all. The carb cars you get valve impressions because the cams are more aggressive. Heads back on with new head gaskets, belts and water pump on. Next is pressure test the cooling system then install on the gearbox.

Runners finished, its hard to be sloppy but I tried. Not quite as ugly as an original but its in the spirit of what they would've done. The reason for the texture is to hide the crude casting, the seams and grinder marks in particular that were used to clean up the biggest flaws then cover it over with wrinkle. Its like those body jobs where they spray rocker guard half way up the doors to hide the sins beneath.

Had the injectors tested today and the outcome explains why the car ran so bad. The only good one has the blue cap on it. The 3 pour fuel out and the other 8 leak. They asked me what I ran through them to make them this bad. They can't get them to work right after a clean so Ill replace the 12.

When I took the car apart I found white debris in the WUR screens, not sure where it came from but Ill have to investigate so it doesn't happen again.

Coming along! Found more painted items. Most of the castings that would be bare from the factory had been painted by a previous tech including the anodized crankcase vent pipe. Ive been correcting the finishes as I go along. Ignore the hose clamps that are there, they're only temporary.

15PSI and I let it sit while I do other work and I have a look at it now and then. I don't have a specific amount of time. I just make sure I dont have any water dripping from anywhere inside or out.
