I'm on the hunt for a red F355 (high school nostalgia purchase) but it occurred to me that these things can get a lot of attention. Personally, I don't care for that and I'm hoping it being an older model and living in an upscale area where Ferraris are not particularly rare (I usually spot 1-2 on my 10 mile commute to work) should make it a bit easier to fly under the radar.

I would appreciate hearing from others here on their experience with the level of attention these cars get.

For reference, my other sports cars (Silver Porsche 911 and Steel Gray Aston Vantage) get as much attention as a 10 year old Honda Civic in my area and I really like that.

    Tons. All. The. Time.

A black or silver car may sneak around a bit easier, but a red Ferrari will always get attention (thanks magnum)

It's one if the quirks of the car you'll have to get used to ;)

Got plenty of thumbs ups in a black 355. Can’t imagine all the looks a red one would get.

Yes, a lot. Red would not be my first choice but so happens I've had 2 of them now.

I don't think I get a lot of attention but I rarely drive it and when I do it's in the early morning. I don't go anywhere in it except the odd cars and coffee or Ferrari event. At the ferraFe events I think it does not get a lot of attention when compared to other cars. All the Instagram kids are focused on the late model stuff that you see everywhere.

I have a rossa corsa 355...wanted blue but could not find one.
Gas stations in any color Ferrari will rarely be a singular event.

My wife is the same as yours. Shy accountant. Good luck.

I just bought her a new car. Porsche Cayenne? MB SLC? Audi? BMW? We looked at 'em all... Nope!
Volvo XC60 <shrug> It is blue so there is that. :)

I’ve got a black 355. I get attention on the roads. Thumbs up, waves and what not. Every so often someone in a modded civic will want to race.

Red will always get the most attention but a 355 with a non stock exhaust will get major attention in any color :)

The ones I love the best are the one finger salutes from the cars with "Bernie" bumper stickers.

I just smile and keep on truckin' :)

Red spider: people love it. Pretty much unanimous praise. As noted, people will approach at gas stations - I let younger people sit in it and get pictures.

Guys ask "what year is that!?" or "How fast does it go?!" at lights. At least once, every time I have it out. Younger guys ask "how much?" and I tell them.

I warn people that a red Spider is like driving around a parade float. If you're ever short on attention, cruise the Las Vegas Strip in one and watch people take photos. At red lights, people shout for you to blip the throttle, run up and pose with it, etc.

Flying under the radar while driving a red Ferrari? Hm, look under oxymoron definition.

Ditto to everything that's been said. Have a red 355 spider, Porsche 930 slantnose and Porsche GT3. I get so much more attention in the red spider, all good so far. I'm an introvert and mostly like to be left alone but you won't be in the spider as other owners mentioned. Most people don't know the difference between a new ferrari and an older ferrari. When I tell people it's an 98 model, people are shocked. If you think too much attention is a deal killer, I would recommend to stick with a Porsche. No one really notices a Porsche, although the 930 slant is a different story. In the end, the 355s are great cars but you won't regret it. I certainly haven't. I just need to find more time to drive it.

It's even more true, as my "out in the boonies" station has higher octane ethanol free...

    "is that a real ferrari"
"how long have you had it"
"I could have bought one of those (insert excuse)"
"how much did you pay for it?" and then humorous indignation because their new GTi cost more

Thanks for the responses everyone - I guess the consensus is pretty clear! It doesn't really surprise me but does give me pause...

Maybe I'm overthinking the impact of location based on my experience of moving from the midwest (Columbus OH) where my Vantage would get noticed to La Jolla CA where it gets completely ignored. But certainly a red Ferrari is quite a bit flashier than a gray Aston Martin.

We should start a thread about the questions a guy gets asked when out with a Ferrari....and our answers

I pulled in at a local Tech College car show and three kids came running up.
I was not even out of the car and one asked if it was real or a Fiero?

I confessed and said it was a Fiero.
BUT! I used a real Ferrari windshield...and pointed at the logo on the windscreen.
Then I explained I used a real Ferrari body, real Ferrari seats.....and then popped the rear deck and said I even found a real Ferrari engine!

His buddy's began beating on him and he ran away.....

    :)

Less attention that my former red 328 but more attention than my Silverstone 612. The blacks and grays are going to blend into traffic more which may bean less likely to get a ticket. That being said, red with tan is the classic.

A highly logical suggestion... but I'm afraid this is an emotional and irrational purchase. Hmmm... I will think about it some more.
