Not too familiar with how BAT works to be honest, but if it is like any other auction, wouldn’t you need at least 2 guys sipping too many Martinis to bid up the price that high? I can understand 1 delusional person , but 2 at the same time? Seems the car was marketed well and the bidders “perceived” the car to be pristine. Whether it is or not is another matter.

The title of this thread should really be, “how to present/market your F355 on BAT to get top dollar” What the car actually is is less important.

    Shill bidding perhaps who knows...
On another note, whats up with BAT... yet 2 more 355's this week, were averaging like 2 week. Seems they are being unloaded not hoarded.

That only works if you're confident the other guy is willing to pay more. Any shill bidding above $100k would be risky for the seller (to lose the sale). It went up to $111k meaning bidding continued safely above $100k. Shill bidding doesn't work once it is above what you think it is really worth.

Right good point, but 355 spiders are worth that from reading this post. Amazing cars no doubt. Additionally if you can see the other bidder, which you could, and saw he was buying cars at top dollar, which he was, so green light. Just a theory of course.

Reversing the question - how many 355's would you reasonably expect to sell in a given week in the US? There were around 10,000 made worldwide, of which I believe 7000 made it to the US (someone correct me if I'm wrong about this). An average owner holds onto the car how long - 3 years? 5 years? Maybe 7 years? At an average owner life of 5 years, around 27 F355's would come up for sale in any given week in the US. At 10 years per owner this would still be around 13 or so a week being sold. I would hazard a guess that BaT is attracting cars that would have been sold elsewhere (AutoTrader, Ebay or an actual auction etc). So 2 a week seems low to me - I would expect this to increase over time as BaT becomes the main auction forum on the internet.

I looked at this car. Unfortunately the pictures are hiding a lot. It's been resprayed (and not very well), needs tires, has curb rash on rims, a quarter-sized chip in the windshield, and many scuffs, dings, and chips in the paint. On original headers and cats. With $10K-$15K sunk into it, it'd be a nice driver. The asking price is way, way too high for it to make sense.

Glad to see that someone actually looked at a car and comes back with what it really is. I get so tired of post stating how great a car is after viewing nothing but the pictures. A condition 1 car and a condition 3 car can look equally good in pictures.

That's true - pictures can hide a lot. But, I trained eye (from following these cars for a long time) knows the tell tale signs to look for, at least the low hanging fruit ;)

Hopefully no one buys a classic car without seeing it in person.

^ I've bought most without seeing them in person. I'm either lucky or have a good sense of what I'm getting with the right photos.

I'm very specific about what photos I need. If I don't get them I move on.

I started buying Ferrari's site unseen 2 years ago. I have also bought about 8-10 other makes of cars in the last two years based on pics and conversations with people without seeing them. NUTS! I was burned once, by a dealer and I had an out and should have taken it - arrrghh! I did have eyes on the ground and others opinions and direct on the phone description for my last two Ferrari's. I am not buying anymore anytime soon, so maybe the rest from buying will bring me some sanity. I think my next car will be a 2020 Kia Soul EV lease for daily duty. The next Ferrari conquest will be a Gated 550 after kid #1 goes to college and I see how that plays out with scholarships and school choice. Or maybe I will go broke, there is always that.

Agreed, if they are in the pictures. Said from a guy who bought his 355 and Cayman S based on pictures and emails.

My problem is actually more that there have been numerous post here saying how good a car looks when simply looking at all the pictures posted does show numerous flaws.

Folks are surprised to see a 355 pushing over 100k. I’m surprised it’s pushing under 200k. The 355 is not your grandfather car and it doesn’t belong in your son garage. It belongs to an era of automotive design excelence. Please spare me the “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder”. If this is true than there wouldn’t be super models or playboy magazines. I suppose people only read the articles. The 355(spider) is the most proportioned car at all angles with uninterrupted lines from front to back. Cars befor it do not. And cars after it are massive and round. I can go on but I’ll be just beating on a dead horse. :) ;)

Well, I for one never found every Playmate appealing. Nor do I find every super model attractive. Far from it. But I have to agree with your comments re the 355 spider. For me, not so much the B. :D

Great minds don’t always walk the same path but they always end at the same destination. The exotic car world has become a forest with so many makes and models. The 355 is a tree in forest. The 355 spider is a unique tree among trees. It takes a person with excellent eye sight and special perception to see how beautiful it is.
    Don’t get lost now. It’s a jungle out there. ;) ;)

well... until you put the top up. to me thats true of almost all convertibles though. With the top down its stunning and Most would agree on that.

why they all are not over 100k is a mystery.

$77 with buy fee. Not terrible. With a known clutch and more recent service, would be smoking deal or may have brought more. Seller was MIA, probably traveling. Still see them coming up. Need more $90k plus transactions [emoji16]

More like $75600, no? 5% fee is what I read. Seems about right to me for a 35k mile car with 7 previous owners.

That is still a strong price for that car, supporting the market being up.

Yeah my bad, I had $5k on the brain for the fee, forgetting it as stayed below $100k.... as the original title of this thread was $111k Spider and I had $5k on top of that.

Yeah- I’m a bit confused. There are 2 95s in similar spec with fewer miles offered below $80k OBO. Seems like a strong price for this example.

95 red on black 23k miles seriously appears nicer all around w better service history
    https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F303077788110

95 red on tan 30k miles also appears meaningfully nicer with a full history
    https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F264217119306

Conceivably there’s a few $k in negotiation here so they’re almost flat?

Not a fan of the selling dealer on first car. I called about it. Was going to move on it at $77k shipped from Fl to Dallas. Just did not have a good feel for the conversation, the selling party and the actual condition of the car.

Second car is nice but not Rosso Corso. So I passed on that and never called. It is probably a nicer car.

Comparing all 3, I think the BaT car at $75,600 is pretty fair. I think as Dave said, prices are all over the map for one reason or another, but truly nice cars sell offline for nearly 6 figures or more. That trend will probably rise. Looking at the comments, people still do not understand the car. Are misinformed or over read without real world knowledge. I just added up $37k in receipts in the last 4 years of ownership by prior owner on my 1998 F1 GTS. Nearly 80% of it at two dealers. And I think most of it was overkill? Hard to say, but not driving is a key, just 10 miles every few weeks helps. Get them warm, lubricated and functioning as designed. Going to keep miles low on my GTB, but still drive it.
