Tesla Fans got some 'splainin' to do on repeat crash with truck

When that Tesla Model S driver hit a truck trailer as big as a house trailer because the Autoplot didn't see it Tesla fans said the driver was distracted, Now the same accident has re-occured with a different Tesla model! I thought Elon the Wonderful fixed that. I think Tesla fans have too many excuses--this is a deadly flaw...

American safety officials are looking into the circumstances surrounding another fatal Tesla crash. Both the NTSB and the NHTSA have confirmed that they're investigating a collision between a Model 3 and a semi truck in Delray Beach, Florida on March 1st. According to the police report, the truck was turning left to enter a main thoroughfare when the Model 3 crashed into the semi's trailer, shearing off the car's roof and killing the driver. It's not certain if Autopilot was active, although the Model 3 kept traveling for more than 500 yards before coming to a stop.

Tesla said in a statement that it was "deeply saddened" about the collision and was "reaching out" to authorities to cooperate. The NTSB added that it typically takes one to two years to complete investigations like this.

This certainly isn't the first time US safety agencies have investigated Tesla crashes to determine the possible role of Autopilot. However, there are unusually close parallels to a deadly incident from May 2016, when a Model S driver in Florida struck a trailer. His vehicle had Autopilot engaged and also kept going a significant distance after the crash, although investigators cleared Tesla and noted that the driver in that case ignored safety warnings. While the particular circumstances are different, it wouldn't be out of the question for agents to compare the two cases.

 

A. They don't even know if Autopilot as even active when the crash occurred.

B. Autopilot still requires drivers full attention, the driver is required to be paying attention at all times. IF AP was even active, its still the drivers fault.


This entire article and posting is just clickbait. Tesla + Crash = clicks.

 

I dont know what "clickbait means." asked a serious question. Somebody is dead The second time this same accident has happened. I have a friend thar loves his Tesla but I forward to him all news of evidence Teslas are not perfected yet. But he is an engineer and I found in the automotive, and aircraft industry, engineers accept a certain failure rate (remember when the first civillian airliner jets went into the drink because of the shape of the windows?)

 

Ran across this graphic just yesterday on automatic driving challenges. One would think that radar would be an easy fix and have been perfected by now. Apparently trucks and large animals are still harder to detect than one would think, especially when a human is not also paying attention.

It seems to be such a simple issue of the marketing overstating the actual ability of the feature. It in fact is NOT an autopilot. It's glorified cruise control. Tesla should be sued and not allowed to call the feature "Autopilot". So many people especially the younger are brainwashed to implicitly trust the computer presuming they know what it does or doesn't do and this is what it leads to.

 

As energy88 said: "...especially when a human is not also paying attention...." Pay attention when you are driving! At no time has Tesla ever suggested that the driver does not need to PAY ATTENTION when driving. AutoPIlot is not a substitute for PAYING ATTENTION. If a Tesla (or any other car offering 'automated driving) driver wants to text or sleep while at the wheel, this is what happens. Auto pilot is not a substitute for not PAYING ATTENTION. Not in a 'jetliner', not in your KingAir, and certainly not on the highway.
And 'clickbait' is the same as 'fake news'. PAY ATTENTION!

Sucks, but you should always be paying attention. You have to really not be paying attention at all to run into a truck like that.

 

But this is exactly how autopilot works in aircraft. It's a pilot aid, it does not remove responsibility from the pilot.

Whats funny is the clicks are by all of the tesla fanboys to shout about it. In the real world... where noncar people are... they just don't care and don't click. Its just another car accident.

Eh, how do you know the driver wasn't completely aware of what it did but happened to be texting or doing something else? You're acting like the only possible conclusion for this is the driver expecting AP to do more than it do.

Some people don't pay attention while they drive and end up dead. It happens.

 

Virtually impossible for the human mind to stay vigilant when there is nothing to do. People will always be lulled into a false sense of nothing can go wrong.

No. I’m acting like someone reacting to an article. The speculation which may prove to be true or false is suspecting a pattern in the similar crashes hence the investigation.

Yes. Yes they do. Too many times the careless selfish wastes of oxygen kill others who are innocent people.
