14inch wheels v 16inch on an early 308.

On the 16" front. the first deliveries of the New Pirelli Cinturato P7 205/55R16 & 225/50R16 P7 should be with us next week. I am undecided as to weather i want to mention the 16" Pirelli tyres on the Dino Pages, because i principally don't like the idea of selling the for a Dino. As i am against fitting something like this to a Dino. However as a counter argument fitting a '70s low profile tyre will handle better on a Dino than a modern one, and i am after all in business, so maybe i need to reconsider my position about what i add to the Dino page.

I found a boxer wheel belongs to Thomas Shaughnessy that has similar style stencil outside and inside casting. It's possible that the 16" QV and the boxer wheels were made around the same era from the same company?

I cannot say that i would fit 16" wheels on my 308 However if i had a 308 that came with 16" wheel than these would be the best tyres

My car came with original 14" rims, and - as a purely aesthetic consideration - I sourced a set of OEM 16"s soon after. It feels and seems to handle substantially better. Can't say how much of that is attributable to the new tires that went along with the new rims, but it felt like a substantial improvement.

 

The 8J x 16 in the top picture with stenciled size is NOT a later QV 16” wheel. These are earlier 16” wheels. The QV wheels have the raised metal script. But the boxer wheels are very likely the same manufacturer as the early 308 wheel in the top pic. Technomagnesio from what those who know more than I have said here and elsewhere and based on the logo.

 

I think their are differences in what people consider as handling

handling is about light, fast, precise steering with a progressive breakaway which is what you get from thinner tyres, where as great road holding comes from the fatter tyres. It might seem a bit odd but a 205/70VR14 will have a thinner foot print than a 205/55R16.

So i always thought it interesting that the 308s https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/classic-car-tyres/ferrari/308.html went from 205/70R14 to 220/55R390 but then when they moved onto the 16" wheels with the 328 https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/classic-car-tyres/ferrari/328.html they went back to the thinner 205 on the front which i can only imagine was to make them turn in quicker as would happen with a thinner front tyre.

However it is worth also mentioning that comfort is sacrificed when going from 14" wheels to 16".

 

spent a day Yesterday at Pirelli test track in Vizzola Ticino, Italy. We participaded with our cars to a Pirelli video making about classic Pirelli tires lineup (it will be shown at @@@@@ @'@@@@ this year), with more or less twenty classic cars of different ages and brands. We talked a lot with the Pirelli Classic tires dept boss, and he explained us how they choose the correct tire compound for classic cars, and why we should avoid to put on our 40 years old car a tire that is designed for present day cars (expecially if it's a street legal race tire or something like that). A wonderful day.

It was not a press conference: it was just a filming event about Pirelli classic tires. So the Pirelli test drivers, the engineers and the boss talked a bit with each of us (or small groups of us) during the filming sessions pauses. I had no interest about the CN36 so I talked with them just about P7 and Pzero. What they told me in general was this: there are some cars (eg. classic Porsche 911) that can become very hard to control with todays tires so they have to find the best balance between the old compound and the modern compounds, to have a good aderence without modifying too much the original car handling and safety. And that it's not easy. All the cars on the track were fitted with brand new Pirelli classic tires (CN36 for many of them)

What would you like to know about the CN36?

I just got of set of the 7,5x14" in good nick for 1000 Euros in Stockholm - need paint or careful restoration - so I can keep the stickers? Straight - and no cracks!

This is interesting. I've always thought the springs rates ans roll centers on a 308 are a bit bizarre but all stock it seems to work but tire compliance are grip have to be part of that.

When I started looking at braking I realized the stock setup becomes unstable (rear locks first) when tire grip hits about 0.9g-1.0g. 200tw street legal case autoX tires produce about 1.2g-1.3g.... definitely unsafe with a stock brake setup. So 1 change asks for other changes.....but 1.2+g in a 308 feels amazing so in my mind worth the effort.

 

Eek! be careful of those P4000 tyres. I'm not knocking them as a tyre, but they are just old. Pirelli stopped that range in 2011

Thanks - yes the P4000 are going off - considering the CN36 from Longstone. I have P7 cinturatos on my 16`wheels. I was very satisfied with the CN36 on my old Alfa Romeo Bertone Coupe.

 

Tricky really, but if you are in Norway i would say CN36. If it is cold and wet i would rather be on a CN36 than a XWX.

I would have encouraged you to go smaller on your Bertone, I think 165R14 Cinturato CA67 is perfect for those cars, or Alf would have fitted a low profile tyre, (like they did on the Montreal in 1970). However if you have got wider wheels then the CN36 is epic. and i'm also aware that probably 73% of the Alfa fraterity think i'm wrong about the thin tyre thing. (i made that statistic up by the way, its probaly more.) but i also know everyone who goes back down to a period 165 tyre on those cars, be it XAS or Cinturato, don't go back to wider low profile modern tyres.

 

ha ha - didnt see that you where from Longstone! Thanks for your recommondation. I bought 185R14 CN 36 from you a few years ago - and they performed very well at track days - I was so surprised! I hope that CN 36 on my my 14`campos for my 308 will make it lighter - more precise.

 

Then they need to ensure supply - I needed new tyres last year - not a single suitable Pirelli set available in Australia... nor could they give a date when they might be available.

I am sorry about that. you know the world of classic tyres has been in a state of chaos since the pandemic. We are very nearly back up to speed with Pirelli, I'm just waiting for 2 1950's and 1960s size coming back into stock and an XJS tyre then we will be firing on all cuylinders agian. All the stocks of tyres evaporated during the pandemic because factory shut downs were making it impossible to keep up, and unfortunately classic tyres weren't top priority. The situation was made worse by that Russian idiot, which effected Michelin quite badly, they had a range of Yongtime tyres made in Russia where they ceased production but we should be getting those back on line soon.

The 205/70VR14 Cinturato CN36 came back in stock in October.

The Austrailian distributor for the Pirelli Collezione Range is Stucky tyres for future reference. Russel knows his stuff.

I think people get distracted by the importance of a tread pattern. Actually Pirelli's compounds are fabulous, which gives good grip, but the really important thing is the carcass. Classic light weight, rear wheel drive, sports cars like your Alfa; has relatively long travel in its suspension, modern tyres will grip - let go - grip - let go - etc however on the Pirelli Skinned Tomato's you will be gracefully gently drifting in a progressive manner were you can pop the back end out a bit more if you want with a bit more throttle, or bring it back in with a bit less.

A modern computer designed tread pattern is a bit quieter, but the CN36 tread pattern looks super cool, so just rev it more or turn the stereo up!
