Just caught the highlights for SJ and LV - WOW I wish the game didn't start at 10pm...what a third period. SJ fans must be calling in sick today.

The VGK had a problem with penalities with San Jose the entire series and it came back to bite them.

The other problem is Vegas has had a problem all season playing only 50 minutes out of 60. No way they should have given up 3 goals in 5 minutes.

But they played well and didn't embarrass themselves. Like all Vegas games they are really exciting.

The players, fans, coaches and all hockey lovers who grew up with the game in the 70's through 2000 must be wondering what happened to their game. A long consultation for officials and then a 5 minute match penalty in the waning minutes of a game 7. OY ! I hope that the Caps-Canes game tonight is decided by the players.

You can say that but Stasny was pretty dumb to slam the player down when the game was completely under control. The Sharks had nothing. All they had to do is cruise the last 10 minutes. In this series both had a problem with penalties. Its like they each got under their skin and couldn't control what they were doing. That's no excuse. The Knights should have won this game pretty easily.

Its disappointing to be so close. I think they could have beaten Colorado. After that, I don't know if they would go any farther. But the Golden Knights were not the same time they were in their first season. Too streaky. Inconsistent play. And backup goal tending was poor putting more pressure on Fleury.

With Stone now for a full season I think next year could be pretty interesting. So, wait for next year!

That loss by Vegas is right up there with the Leafs collapse vs Boston on 2013 when the Leafs had a 4-1 lead with 13 minutes to go and a 2 goal lead with 1:22 to go

I never thought I would ever see that again.

It was the right call. The cross check was at the chest level and was only a minor penalty, but because there was an injury involved it automatically gets upgraded to (at minimum) a major or (at maximum) a match penalty. That situation is taken right out of the referees hands and decision making, there is no discretion whatsoever.

Having watched the replay (I couldn't stay awake that late), I agree that the penalty could have been a 2 minute minor, or even a double minor, but I have to say I can't ever remember a team scoring 4 goals on 5 minute major. Vagas can't blame that on the refs.

See my post above when an injury is involved. Same call would apply even if it was a harmless trip that led to an injury

Today is a scary day. With all the unexpected turns I am left here completely gassed. My home team of the Leafs have blown it. The Jets screwed the pooch. Calgary bit the dust. The only remaining team I care, even the slightest about, is Washington. If they bow out tonight I may just throw something at my TV and call this season over.

No dis-respect for those teams involved as it has brought some great games and surprises...just not my year I guess.

    Go Caps Go!

    Yep!

It was a penalty they should have never taken. They lost control of the game. They only have themselves to blame.

What we Vegas fans can hope for is a little more discipline and consistency next year. But the management is fully committed to a winning team and as a Vegas fan, you have to love that. I'm not sure every team in the NHL has that idea in their heads.

I would go to a game only to see hustle on the ice. If they hustle and lose, I'm still happy. I thought Game 6 was that way while Game 5 was the opposite. Its the games where they appeared to let down that is upsetting. Maybe they will learn from this.

And lets be honest here... the Sharks are not playing that well either. Goal tending was terrible and they also let some games go away from a lack of self control.

Current home team VGK - out
Childhood home team - Leafs* - out
Family team I also follow - Jets - out

Might as well cancel Hulu now, I had signed up again to watch the playoffs.

*Growing up in Niagara in the 80s it was either Leafs, Sabres or Canadiens. Cool kids like the Canadiens, that was back in the Roy, Chelios, Carbonneau days.

Caps had a 2 game series lead and twice led by 2 goals in game 7. I can't believe they lost.

well boys, that's hockey. and just to clear up my comment about the 5 minute match. I didn't say that a penalty wasn't deserved and it was totally stupid to awaken a team that you had all but beaten. My only point is that back in the old days I don't care what infraction occurred -including manslaughter- there would never have been a 5 minute major/match penalty in the waning minutes of a game 7 in the playoffs. And now, on to the next round and Tamas, pick up the Canes mantle.

Looks like the referees from the Vegas-Sharks game 7 have been suspended for the rest of the playoffs. The NHL even went as far as to apologize to Vegas.

As a referee myself, I take serious offence to this.

Expect some backlash of some sort from the NHL Referees Association.

ESPN said two referees weren’t assigned for the next round, but didn’t mention suspensions.

They also said the rule is the major is at discretion of the on ice officials. I’m not on one side or the other, but the crosscheck did seem excessive and resulted in an injury - regardless of hitting the player in chest vs face. To me the call was reasonable. I also believe that with the two violent boarding hits resulting in suspensions the officials were on alert to excessive hitting. But as I’ve always said, hockey is the most violent conventional sport so it’s not a shock to see guys getting hurt out there.
