F3 career was faked. Best engines bought by daddy and the lesser gone to the rest. He was in the best F3 team and his own support was as large as entire teams. You can fake it in the lower classes but in F1 where everything is micrometer perfect, this is simply not done. A lot better if someone else is footing the bill! Would I have done it if I was a billionaire? Yes I'd do my best to get my son in, for sure. Remember those private tests Stroll did before he came to F1 (but after his announcement?). He did a sickening amount of miles (on current F1 tracks) in a 2014 car. By the time he was done testing with the 2014 car he had nearly as many hybrid miles under his belt as any other F1 driver. And he still looks out of his depth. If I was papa stroll, I'd have got my son into the 2014 car, and assess him properly. Get him in F2 first and continue testing if necessary. Money sure wasn't the issue. If he could improve his F1 driving in the test car so he'd do respectable times, yes I'd foot the bill for at least a season. But if he wasn't improving, reached his talent ceiling....I'd buy him into the F1 clienti programme and fund LMP1/2 career instead.
It's kind of a paradox really--> Dad saving a team only to employ his below average son to race in it thereby losing points in the end of the season. Dad's gonna have to make a business decision and override his personal one.

He may gain places if he looks after his car and stays out of trouble like he does sometimes. Probably Point Racing will decide a very conservative strategy for him. It may not be glorious, but hey, he is an amateur in a field of pros, it seems.

I meant Lawrence Stroll is not stupid to ignore his son's limited skills, and he probably won't indulge in financing him in F1 for ever. By now it's obvious to anyone that Lance won't get very far. I think his accelerated career path to F1 was a mistake, but he may have fulfilled his father ambition more than his own.
