Does the dealer typically perform a more thorough PPI versus indy shops?

Anyone have any experience at Ferrari of SF or Ferrari of Silicon Valley? If yes could I see your PPI report to get an idea what they will examine? Would these shops show me their PPI reports as well?

There is a car in San Francisco I'm like to have a PPI performed on.

I would 100% go to the dealer for a PPI if it’s available vs and Indy. No offense to the Indy, but the dealer is the ultimate source of good/bad/whatever, when **** hits the fan, so I’ll just go there if I need to do it. My 2c.

I had my PPI done for my 2005 F430 F1 at Taomina Imports: https://www.taorminaimports.com/. They are located in San Carlos...

They were very thorough and found a "whirring" sound coming from the clutch area even though the computer said it had 70% life left. Turned out to be a worn out throw out bearing at only 22K miles. They also found many items from a loose tail light, to the rear hatch microswitch being faulty, to calling out all the "sticky button areas. They have a 65 item comprehensive checklist... Greg and Ted are really cool guys and they explain everything very well. This was my first Ferrari, so I had a lot of "newbie" questions and they answered them all.

    All the best!

How much do they charge for a PPI?

My experience with Taormina couldn’t have been any different, albeit with an older model (328GTS). Overlooked >$10k in necessary repairs.

PPI won't save you, especially on older cars, just too hard to spot "potential" issues. My Italian mechanic in LA, doing my PPI, drove it like he stole it. The owner selling it said to me....I forgot how fast that car is! He just knew the cars and didn't recommend leak downs, compression, etc. looked at the computer stuff and said buy it. Haven't looked back. Cheers!

For older cars on the Peninsula you want to see Tony at Modena Motors in Redwood City. There isn’t a better Ferrari mechanic on the West Coast His knowledge of 80s and 90s cars is astonishing. F40 owners around the world ship their cars to him for service.

    Truly, avoid Taormina.

I will put Tony at T&R's onto this list of recommended Ferrari indy's. He is in SF has a F430 of his own. He services my Challenge Stradale and is awesome!

Hi Brian, you used to take care of my 95 456 when you were in San Ramon. I had been taking the car to John Heim at SF Motorsport then GMP, but (as you noted) he's not at GMP anymore. Do you (or anyone) know where John went?
    Thanks

It was a pleasure Stan. While I do miss my old clients I do not miss California. If I had any sense I would have moved a long time ago instead of waiting until government interference drove me out.

Concerning PPI: F-of SV won't do a formal PPI. They will just do what they call a mechanical inspection that is somewhat equivalent to a PPI ~ $600. It's what they usually do for their pre-service warranty inspection.

You can also pay the hourly rate for anything specific you want them to inspect. They are pretty decent, friendly, and don't overcharge.

Currently they have Teslas for loaners. I've been asking them to get Taycans instead of cars for handicapped people.

It would have to depend on where the car is coming from I guess because this Yelp review came from SFSC

    Buyer beware.

Don't trust their salesman's representation of service records.

Don't trust Ted Taormina, the mechanic next door who serves as their service center, to do a PPI.

Get the records reviewed and a vehicle inspection by a fully-independent expert in the marque and model you're considering.

Try ISSIMI Mechanicca, and ask for Gianluca Cimini. You can mention me if you like. He's got an incredible team, and they're a bit lesser discovered. Their prices aren't cheap, but you don't get into this type of thing to save a penny.
