Garage Queens

I will be purchasing a 458 shortly and I don’t understand why Ferrari owners treat these cars so delicately. Why let them sit in the garage all week and drove them around the neighborhood on Sundays. I want to drive mine and enjoy it. I’ve always had Porsches. And they have been hearty cars meant to be driven. What am I missing here? Should I stick with my Porsches?

Lol it all comes down to how much you can spend and don’t care.
I track cars whatever in my hand, mainly F cars and spend alot servicing it afterwards. It is expensive side. I would rather beat Porsches and M3s to death on track for cost reasons but they are not exciting as Ferraris because a lot more risk involved driving F on track and this makes things interesting.

There are people like me everywhere and you will not be alone.

I respect my cars for what it is but treat it as a car not treasure and I have some change in my pocket to back it up.

I buy cars to drive them. I typically buy high mileages car and just drive them. I have a 100k mike 458 that had some minor issues that looks like a lower mile one. Buy it and drive it.

 

I suspect some don't drive their cars to keep the miles down for resale. I put over 100K miles on my first Ferrari, a 1979 308GTS. I drive one of my cars every weekend and sometimes during the week if the weather is nice.

 

Well said OP but not all F-owners are like that. I've driven my both 458s over 100 000 km = around 62 000 miles over 4 years, daily driven and occasionally on track.

I think some buy them for the bragging rights rather then having the true passion for driving them which I had since I was a kid, the first thing I learned to spell was Ferrari F40

When it comes to Porsches honestly had a few of them and could not care less owning one again, heck I even had nightmares trading my 458 for a 911, that says it all. Off course CGT and 918 is different ballgame. But yes you are correct, P-cars are not that mileage sensitive which Ferraris (still unfortunately even though then can be daily driven) are.

 

Just for the sake of arguing, I'd say that there is a place between garage queen and daily driver.
A garage queen is kept in the garage as a museum piece and after years it still has virtually no miles.
A daily driver is used everyday as a regular car.
None of these two options is right for me (but everyone will have his own view) - I want to drive the Ferrari, on road and on track, but I think there are more convenient solutions for daily drive (it may also depends on where one lives and what kind of travels the daily drives are). I like the idea of specialisation, to some extent.

 

Exactly! These cars are like fine wine or champagne. (I am sure that you, as a French gentleman, reveres the wine analogy ) If you drink it every day, it loses the special feeling. They are to be savoured on special occasions (i.e. a track day, or a Sunday morning mountain drive). Mistreating them on the daily commute is like wearing an Armani suit at the gym; both uncomfortable and a waste!!!

 

So true. I think Seinfeld said “not driving your car is like having a fish tank and not looking at the fish.” Most reasons for not driving particularly in inclement parts of the country have to do with weather concerns. Bragging rights are just plain idiotic. Resale return on investment is another reason but those people think they’re going to live forever. Low thinkers. These cars are meant to be driven regularly, they just run better when you work them. Cars are like people, when you don’t use them they dry out

 

You have to remember that most folks that can afford an F car have multiple exotics in their stable. I sold my scud with 5000 miles. Not because I wanted an ornament in my garage, but because mileage was spread among several vehicles. That coupled with work demands can impact the use of the vehicle.

 

Why anyone would deny themselves the pleasure engendered by driving their beloved car is beyond me. I eagerly await every day to have the opportunity of getting behind the wheel and uniting with my glorious companion and going out for a drive. Experiencing this joy as often as possible, does not in any way minimize the special occasion sensation I feel.

 

I used to think not driving your cars was silly... and then we had a baby. Now my “toy” cars just sit because I’d rather spend time with my wife and daughter at this juncture. I’ll get back to it, but the cars can wait. I’d imagine that lack of time is the biggest reason for cars siting.

 

Stick with Porsche if you want want to track the car. It just makes financial sense. Otherwise do what you want!

Personally, I'm grateful for garage queen owners like the guy who took 100k off the price of my 458, barely drove it, put 10k in mods on it, and held it for me until I could afford it five years later. That Floridian is a saint!

THIS. My car had 4600miles on it and I bought it 100K under sticker, it was 4.5 years old. 5 months in and I'm at 8,000 miles and the car runs much smoother than day one. Tomorrow isn't guaranteed, live now.

 

I'll give you another reason having owned both. Imagine you are a physician. Most people assume they do well for themselves and driving a Porsche to work really isn't that big of a deal, even a GT3. Now, drive a Ferrari to work. Any Ferrari, even an old 308. Suddenly they look at you differently. Your staff, your patients. It can and does affect your daily work interactions. For better or worse, you can NEVER fly under the radar in a Ferrari and that limits when and where you can take it. I will still put 3-4k miles a year on it but not 20k. My kids don't like me to take it to school events for the same reasons. So, I can only take it if there will be a big parking lot or not a lot of their friends or parents around. I know, you can say WTF, who cares about them but in a small community, it matters and keeping your family happy is as important as keeping yourself happy. I don't drive a Ferrari to impress people. I do it because I absolutely love cars and find they are just wonderful machines. The rock star attention I could do without. Porsches, aside from people cutting you off everywhere because they assume you're a jerk, just aren't as big of a deal.

 

Interesting view that is easy for us city dwellers to forget about. F cars don't grow on trees in Austin, but they aren't that big a deal either, or I'm just oblivious.

I am a physician and everything you said is completely correct. However, here in Atlanta they still get a lot of looks but there are a lot of exotics driving around. I agree with you I don’t want one for the attention I can’t wait for the performance

 

Certain circumstances may preclude driving an exotic, i.e. when meeting with a supplier, or the ex wife will be at the kid's school play. Outside of that, drive away.

Yea, same here. The weather have been horrible in Tri state this year. Kept raining pretty much every weekend.

 

Yup, this.
If I ever drove an F car to work my whole staff would ask for a raise. Even with more understated cars, patients have commented, “I see I’ve helped pay for your car.” Just not worth it.

Everyone has different reasons but in summary, work, family, kids, multiple cars to spread miles out.
I’ve got 19k miles on my Scud, 9k on CGT, 7k on LP670SV, Speciale is recently acquired so about 4K miles. DD an AM DBS and RR SVR.
