How many years does it typically take for a new design studio to start releasing good stuff into production? Is 7 years quick, slow, or about average?

    All the best,
    Andrew.

There's no set time frame or right and wrong answer. Generally it takes 3 years to put a design into production. A new design theme/direction can be implemented on one or two vehicles in that 3 year time frame. To do the entire lineup would take longer. I think 7 years is a great effort on Lincoln's part. When Cadillac introduced Art & Science it took several body styles to complete the 'look'. IIRC, when Mr. Bangle took over BMW design , it took several entries to complete his vision for BMW. So I think 7 years is a great effort. It certainly depends on how many vehicles are in the portfolio. Audi is in the process of revamping their design language. One vehicle at a time.

Road & Track said... "The design staff knocked off at the rear door for the weekend, leaving the janitorial staff to finish up...:

    They actually sold well, though...

.....and not a big improvement imho.......(except the etron GT concept; BRING IT!)
Sliding a bit OT....re: Lincoln; I hope the marketing guys have a clear picture of who the audience for Lincoln is these days.......'the pundits' seem to think big sedans are not selling in the US, so maybe the studio should be dreaming up more SUV's and another pickup......? (are we even allowed to talk about marketing on this thread?)

    Marketing?
We don’t need no stinking marketing...........

OK, sure, let’s talk about it.
Mr. Mayor is convinced marketing drives design.

I always thought that it was because the guys in design backed it into a wall when they were pushing it to the management viewing & the "brain trust" thought it was brilliant!

A new second generation Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ is apparently on the way. Glad the designers are hands off and not giving it the "Supra" treatment.

Here is another- the Mirai for the Japanese market. Looks like a cross between an Avalon and a Camry. Best part is that it is RWD!

Actually had a black Milano Verde with Panasports and I thought it was quite handsome and, well, unique. Not my favourite design but much better than the horrendous 164 generic blob that followed. Yeesh. I’m a fan of the acquired taste society however, and my love of TR8s, DSes and early Saab 900s are fond reminders I zag first. ;)

I love retro designs. I refuse to call them classic. I fell in love with the z3 because it was a retro-modern take on classic sports cars. I liked the M Roadster version best. Same with the 456/456M; it was a retro-modern take on the 365 GTB and GTC 2+2 (As was the 550/575M, but I didn't like them as much).

I've stumbled across a few nice car images the past few weeks:

Especially that Karsan/Morgan Olson one, blech.

jm2 too bad you couldn't pitch your concept for this! I dig that thing!

Of these, I like the VT Hackney / Workhorse and AM General entries the most, but the Oshkosh Ford will probably get it.

That Brownlie feller sounds a bit like the Larry Tate of Mopar design if the tale's a true one.
