What's the "Italian" approach? Curious to know what it is. Where in Great Britain can we get "collaborative set of minds"? At Mclaren? At Williams? At Red Bull? Like Jock Clear? Why it's hard to keep talented people in Italy? Unless you have family members you need to closely look after in GB, why would you prefer to live in GB instead of Italy? The food is worse, the weather is worse, the traffic is worse, the touristic choices are worse, women are wor... Ops.. Considering that in F1 you are racing in Europe at least 11 weeks per year, I believe it's a bit difficult to have a team headquarted in Charlotte or Tokyo. Audi, Porsche, and now Toyota have all won Le Mans with their operations based in Germany, not GB. Don't take me wrong, GB is indeed the epicenter of motorsport but claiming that if Ferrari was based in GB it would better off, come on guys, that's not smart.
At Britannia everybody feels safe and happy. Ask Zack Brown for further reference. Anyway, these guys were not at the very top, not a dramatic change.
In my opinion you have isolated the critical and concerning difference between the clear best team and Ferrari.
Don't get me wrong, but I can see several reasons why talented engineers/technicians would prefer to locate/stay in UK than in Italy, and it has nothing to do with food, sunshine, women, etc ... There are more choice of companies versed into motor racing in UK, not only in F1, but in other sectors., so more chance of work and probably better pay. 8 of the 10 F1 teams have bases in UK, against one in Italy, and one in Switzerland, right ? There are more suppliers, subcontractors, composite experts, race engineering firms in UK than in Italy, I guess. Apart that Italian culture is different, transplanting one's family here would a massive step. Most engineering jobs in F1 are only temporary (like at Ferrari ! ), so you would have to move your family back home once the contract ends, to find a similar position. The family may like holidaying in Italy, but living there is a different proposition: language, education system, medical cover, etc ... have to be considered . But in the opposite, the reasons why an Italian team would decide to locate in UK are quite valid. I don't know if Ferrari would do that, or if it would solve its problems though.
Race strategy is not an element that needs to evolve. It's something that can change quickly and largely done by planning and consensus. In this regard Binotto has failed miserably. A rubbish car can't be changed overnight, but determining race strategy....and planning for contingencies based on changing race conditions......can be.
Oh I agree when it comes to race strategy. But again, do you still keep the same people in play or get rid of them. Binotto was handed this "ineptness". Jock Clear, after all his years in F1, tells Leclerc at the MonacoGP after the weigh bridge debacle "I think you can go" instead of taking responsibility and say "You go now!!" This is'nt new regarding Ferrari's strat calls in 2019. Binotto has taken responsibility and has addressed this issue as posted by @DF1 in the Monaco race thread.
We have heard it bandied about that the "concept" of the car is wrong. Note: Ferrari has been at the top of the charts where their top speeds are measured. This is mealy mouthing for: We designed the car for higher top speeds (i.e., lower drag) at the expense of ultimate downforce. At the start of the hybrid era, the cars had roughly 800 HP, and slightly slippery cars were the way to go. Now with 1000 HP at the right foot, one no longer needs to save 10 HP of drag for a KPH of top speed, one can directly expend the HP into downforce. Higher drag and higher downforce is the winning combination right now. This is also what is fundamentally wrong with the Williams car, too.
+1 On modern tracks, there are in fact less long straights to worry about for top speed. What is important is high downforce to provide strong grip for acceleration and high corner speed. The cars with the highest top speed are often not those with the best lap times.
I think that Binotto is not capable beyond being a highly skilled technician. I don't think he is a management type beyond, perhaps, supervising a group of technicians or engineers. The tipoff was the talk of his "popularity" with the race team when his promotion was announced. I think they see him more as a relief from the Marlboro Man as opposed to someone who's going to lead them out of the wilderness. Just my opinion as a (very) distant observer.
Ferrari fired the guy that produced their only clear WCC contender in years. Binotto is firing tech people...why? The car isn't up to pace, but it isn't #3, either. Binotto isn't firing anyone on the pitwall. Why? It has been their problem for years. The very clear course of action is to fire EVERYONE on the pitwall today and get the new people ready for next year since this season is clearly blown. Once again, Ferrari running around making all the wrong decisions. Also, Binotto may have inherited a bad pitwall, but he hasn't done a single thing about it. They are worse than they have ever been, and he's telling us they are ok. It is Binotto's call to favor Vettel who has proven that he cannot bring the team titles. SV alone lost the WCC/WDC last year, and Binotto's only thought is to favor him? Please. Ferrari will do nothing but go backwards with this guy in charge.
Hmmmmm, those names are not from the Strategy Department. Ferrari executives need an emergency conference call and actually ask legitimate questions about what is wrong internally.
Absolutely, the UK is a wet, windy, socialist leaning, xenophobic dump, with little going for it unless you are an immigrant looking for a free ride. When it crashes out of Europe, it will be a true laughing stock! I love ferrari, and I would never want it to leave its roots and culture and move the f1 department out of Italy. At the moment, they aren’t getting it right, but as we saw from the hiring of Brawn, Byrne, Schumi and Todd in the mid-90’s, Italy can, have and will again become a powerhouse of F1. The only problem we have is how quickly or slowly Binotto will work to bring the team around

The problem with head rolling is it will take a while for a turnaround, and we must be patient. Binotto could reconstitute the entire team, but where would he get all the talent, and the team will be even more discombobulated than they are now.
