I detect a sense of resignation in Vettel, as though he realizes that they are never going to beat Mercedes. It's probably how the opposition felt when Red Bull dominated F1.

Yep. Sadly the Red Bull was never as dominant the Mercedes has been. So taking the challenge is even harder.

Now is as good of a time as any. Ferrari are dead for the next decade or better. RBR and MB have their #1 drivers which leaves him with no team to go to.

In the meantime, down the road.....

excerpt from "Honda recognizes that he learned "his biggest lesson" with McLaren" (May 28, 2019)

"It will be hard, but if we continue down this road, one day we will be able to fight against Mercedes, we work in that direction, in competition it is about winning and losing, although 50% is probably pressure and 50% is fun. Progress in accordance with our plan, Formula 1 is the best scenario to face this challenge ", Yamamoto pointed to finish.

With Ferrari is such disarray I don't see Max and Lewis wanting to go there. Max certainly won't give up being a Number 1, and I don't think Leclerc would settle for being a Number 2 beyond this year. But I don't think this is about the last days of Zettel...this is about the last days of F1. Hulk and Ricco are already out of their prime. Haas, Renault, and McLaren will fight with each other but there are no great gains or a future to come from that. Alfa, Williams, Racing Point will never leave the back of the pack and will quickly fold by the end of 2020. The Honda teams and drivers will take the leadership from Mercedes. But what else is there for Mercedes to gain from F1? They could even leave at the end of this year. And that would give Ferrari (Fiat) the excuse to do the same. The cascade of teams leaving would be amazing...and suddenly all there will be is Formula E.

Not rosey...just sadly realistic. The future of the ICE is in its past...not in modern F1 or any modern automotive racing or any modern vehicles. Sooner than later all fossil fuels will be banned from public roads. Vintage events will be heavily restricted and regulated...and required to us government supplied fuel in limited amounts. We are well into the era of group think and virtual reality gaming...robot wars (contests)...personal transportation by subscription...we should consider ourselves lucky to have seen the automobile and auto racing when it was at its best.

My God, what a prophesy of doom !! You aren't an optimist, are you?

For me, I think the glass is half full and not half empty. F1 will keep on because it's just another form of Entertainment.
We will probably see some change in 2021 to make F1 slightly cheaper to the team, but with not much alteration in the rules.
Most of the players will still be there, maybe with lower budgets and some standardisation on the cars.
I cannot see the 4 manufacturers (Ferrari, Renault, Honda and Mercedes) leaving because, although costly, F1 still provides the best Platform.
Question marks about Williams, and also the continuity of RB/STR.
Possibly some of today's drivers will have left: Hamilton, Vettel, Kubica, Raikkonen, Perez, Ricciardo, etc ...
Verstappen and Leclerc will be rivals, there will be Albon, Russell, Norris as team leaders and another F3/F2 intake.

Looking forward to it. The show will be different; we just have to adapt.

    LOL right?

So by that analysis... Mercedes is the fastest... and they get spots 1-10 despite only being 2 cars.

What people forget it seems... is one more rules change and everything is back on teh table

...except fun racing. 2021 rules aren't addressing tires at all. They are going to monkey fart around with everything except the one thing that is most detrimental to an exciting race.

Personally, although I wish him well, I wouldn't make forecast about Mick Schumacher's future.
He may be doing well at the moment in lower categories, but that doesn't guaranty a successful transition to F1 one day.
He is yet unknown quantity, as far as I know, so there is no need to saddle him with wild expectations.
To think that he could get a seat at Ferrari and take on the success from where his father left is exagerated, IMO.

There is more than one thing detrimental to F1.
The tyres, for sure, but the aeros mostly. You cannot provide good racing if the cars cannot get close.
I don't know if they have any intention doing anything about it.

Aero is meaningless if the tires go off when they are pushed just a little bit hard, which is what they do now. The entire "race" is about conserving tires. Tires are the largest problem, and they aren't fixing it at all. 2021 will be as boring as 2020 and so on.

Agree. So long as they don't fix the core problems of F1 there's little point driving about in cars you can't even force to win.

I got a sense of SV's tenure coming to an end around 18 months ago. I am sure if his results had been better he may have carried on until the rule changes in 2021.

One positive is Seb can now fully appreciate how frustrating it was for Alonso.

Much of any frustration is self made for Seb. Mistakes on track in a car under his control are only his responsibility

Vettel's self-inflicted mistakes and Ferrari's strategic buffonery are made for one another. Vettel cost the Scuderia a WDC in 2018 with a car Alonso would have won in.

LEC number 1 driver, Mick number 2. Go all in on youth, fix the fight for number one driver for a few years. Only a select few do well after they get past a certain age.

Lec is more than ready to be nº1..Ricci would be perfect pair for him and Ferrari....Ocon could be another chance, mercedes wont fins a place for him, and i believe his better than Botles...even perez could be good, a bit slower than charles but a super solid driver...i too have the feeling that seb has lost heart.,,and please forget Mick, the kidc might be god, or not, but he's still gotta a lot to learn, right now he's not even a top contender in Gp2, he's at least 3 years away for being a good f.1 driver!
